Does anybody else have one of these. I picked it up at a show back in the day. I've never heard of another copy. It has one staple in the middle of the spine holding it together.

When you say you picked it up at a show do you mean you bought it from a retailer? I can't remember what held the one in Previews together (if it was stapeled or glued like the rest of the catalog) though I know some people who did a professional looking job removing some of the 90's comic inserts from Diamond (mine looked like I tore them out ;D). I haven't heard of a free standing comic version of it. It wouldn't surprise me if it existed but I haven't seen it listed anywhere .

I bought it at the philly show that they gave away the Defiant Genesis at ('93 I believe) I picked it up from a dealer that claimed it was created for staff use and only 20 or so copies existed. I don't really believe the 20 copies bit.
It's not a pro removal from previews as they were glued into the catalog with out a spine. Anyway it's identical in every way to the previews version except it has a spine and one staple.

I don't think they would've only created 20 copies either (the cost per issue would be a lot). Interesting, maybe one of the former Defiant talents that sometime come on here can confirm or deny what the retailer said.

Good photo, but one thing is still not clear. Is the outer cover one wrap-around piece? or is there a white strip of paper either glued or taped in place to bind them?
20 copies is probably a realistic number if these were test printings. My understanding is that the printer provides samples to a publisher so they can check for errors before a full run is produced.
I've heard rumors that a stand alone version existed, but this would only convince me as an example if the cover was one complete wrap-around piece.
I've seen plenty of professionally bound comics in my years. Cleaning up a Plasm #0 and making it look more presentable would not be an impressive feat.

The cover is one piece wrapped around and stapled in the middle. The pages are bound the same way.

If you can get a flat scan of the comic, I'll put it with my others and that way anyone carrying on the torch after I wind down can have a complete image archive. I plan on sending a couple of people some CD's of images I've collected. Defiant1

That's a cool looking book. I believe I have the Previews issue that book is in. I got it from a dealer (with the issues that have "One Night In Hollywood" in them) who was going out of business. I was amazed that I actually got all of them together in one buy. Actually, I was buying out part of his stock, intending to open my own comic shop, but didn't actually start the business. I've never seen a stand alone version.

Jim, maybe you can start a thread about the different Birth of the Defiant Universe books as well...
side note, anyone out there that has the variants of this, I am needing one for myself as well (the Birth of the D U)

I think I saved the pictures, but I have three unplugged hard drives of data that i need to sort through. I think it's on them and that's assuming they will work long enough to copy what's on them. For that page I really want a high quality scan, not a picture. I appreciate the offer, but I think it's unnecessary. Defiant1

Sure, what's your email?
I'll try and scan the book over the weekend if I can get a little free time to hook the scanner up.

Dellamorte sent me some greats cans, but I was curious about some color changes on the spine. I wanted him to describe what he's seeing a little better. I'm specifically curious about the cause of the light color changes on the white portion. This looks like a piece of white tape is running the length of the spine. Defiant1

The blue color you see in the scan is bleed-through from the last page of the comic. The #0 issue cover stock is very thin and when blown up to such an extreme view the text and colors for the inside are visible through the back cover.
Again let me say that there is no glue or tape anywhere in this book. Hope that helps.

I guess one of the key identifiers for this is the one staple holding it all together. I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but I want people to fully understand what they are seeing. I've seen a lot of doctored copies in the past. Your comic is very uncommon. I don't want people thinking they have one if they don't. Defiant1

Defiant1, I think I have one of these Comics, although i cannot be sure whether mine is one of the stand-alone ones of the Preview freebie ones. It has a blue wrap around spine with 3 staples; top, middle and bottom. Could you help identify it? Thanks, D.

i cant believe dont have a scan of a stand alone. the blue wrap around with staples indicates a stand alone. the Previews issues would not be wrap around and would have glue and not staples.

The checklist which appears in the category below has a scan. Drew was convinced he had a stand-alone copy, but he described one that wasn't. We exchanged messages on Twitter. I never saw a scan of his. Defiant1
