Man, I'd love to have those books...the pre hero monster books are very cool. I'm willing to take low grade (as seen by the TTA #25 I posted over at Lyria), but even in that condition those books are expensive. Maybe when I win the lottery...

The #7 & #15 were picked up about 1982 for a fraction of what they'd cost today. Books like this were mocked back then because people only wanted the heroes. My goal is to have the whole series. I have 3 or 4 midgrade copies of #60, but I'm missing the 3 most expensive ones in the series. Everything I need is below #60. None of these cost me more than $100 and the same is true of my EC's. I bought no more than 3 at a time and they were bought months apart. When you aren't buying a lot of new books or $10, these are affordable. It's just a matter of setting priorities. I'd rather have one $100 book than 15 - $10 books. I'd rather have one $100 rather than 1000 worthless new books that anyone can find just by driving around the shops. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a lower grade than these if the price was right....but I was biting my lip when I bought the #5 with a crease. The writing on the #3 bothered me, but the physical wear was less so I had to say hey... it's a #3... "Will I ever see it for sale again?"

No luck in filling any TTA holes in my collection yesterday at the show. I saw one beautiful book but it had black specks all over it with a 2" long "Maevel Chipping" piece missing with more areas split and about to fall off.

I finally got around to reading Tales To Astonish #27. Here are things I did not know about the issue.
1) Antman's story is a pretty short story. I knew TTA was an anthology of weird stories, but I expected the lead story to be longer.
2) Didn't know Henry Pym knew Judo. He brags about it one panel where he sidesteps an Ant and sends him over a ledge.
3) Didn't know he was lacking his full human strength at ant size in his first story. That was always a real advantage for him later on.
4) Didn't know he destroyed the serum in his first appearance.
I did know the story was popular and that's why they brought him back. Kinda fun reading his first story because it was a non-superhero story.

Yeah, I saw the cover of TTA #27 and thought it looked more like one of the pre-hero monster books than the first appearance of a Marvel hero. Great book to have!

How many does this give you now???

Tales To Astonish #64 I think this is the first FULL appearance of the Leader. I think he makes a silhouette last panel cameo appearance in #63. This is a cool comic to me. The Giant Man story is drawn by Carl Burgos. The Hulk story is drawn by Steve Ditko. I wonder how much creative input Ditko had on this. It'd be funny if the Leader was his creation. Defiant1

In my process of scanning my comics, I've gotten to a stack of comics my dad picked up for me on one of his road trips. He would occasionally bring me comics because they looked old to him. He was hoping to find something of great value. He eventually gave up. The condition was usually the biggest problem. Defiant1
