I just bought quite a few pages of Broadway art from Andrew Wendel, the artist from Powers That Be/Star Seed. I don't have them yet, but here's what I have, in case someone wants to look through the comics and see the pages. Keep in mind the numbers are for the story pages, so they won't match up with the numbered pages in the book, because the intro page and the Shooter editorial were numbered Page 1 and Page 2 in most of the issues.
PTB #1 page 6, page 9 PTB #3 page 17 PTB #4 page 2, page 16 PTB #6 page 1
and one Valiant page, a nice Sean Chen splash page:
Harbinger #28 page 5
paid quite a bit more for one purchase of art than I ever had, but I also have never bought so many pages at one time. It averages out to just under $38 a page, including shipping and I think I picked out some pretty nice pages. I'll take a picture once I receive them.
BTW, I would have really liked to had PTB #1 page 1, the splash page image of the car impaled on top of the building (the Empire State building?), but it was one of the more expensive pages (and for good reason).

Good score, J. Oh, and I believe it was the Chrysler Building. How much was it?

Good score. He never answered any of my attempts to contact him so I have no intention of ever buying anything from him. Defiant1 Yeah, that kind of sucks. He seems like a real nice guy, maybe he's just a little lax on answering e-mails. I kind of lucked out because he put together the Broadway art list just for me, he didn't post it on the vf boards. Some of the best pages were gone, but most of it was intact. I had actually wanted four of the Valiant pages, but one was gone and the two others I had interest in were priced a bit higher than I wanted to pay.

I get tired of artists ignoring me until they want publicity or money. I'm not their ace in the hole if they want a little extra cash one month. I don't work for them. A business transaction is a two way deal. I'm 99% sure I got a read receipt returned on one of my emails meaning that he ignored my message. I also found his band's myspace page and got ignored when I wrote them. Unlike most people, when I can't get what I want, I quit wanting it. It's a tough path to make me care again because bulls#!t is bulls#!t and I have no interest in wading through it. Q

Well, I made a mistake when I ordered the pages. In Powers That Be #4, there is a section of pages which are recaps of things that happened in previous issues. Unfortunately, those pages did not count in the page count of original art for the issue, so the pages I received for issue #4 were NOT the pages I thought I was getting. Otherwise, I think I did well. Here's some pictures of the pages I received:

You got some good stuff. It sure beats the leftover stuff I always have to pick through. I always like Broadway better than Defiant, but I never could reach anyone wanting to sell anything unless they were jacking it up to stupid prices. I emailed another artist I keep forgetting about... an inker. I doubt he has anything left after all these years... but who knows. He was working on unpublished Defiant stuff. I'm really more interested in the unpublished stuff. What I'd really like are some Curt Swan Starseed tryout pages. I search for them occasionally but doubt they'll ever surface.

Defiant1 Forgive my ignorance, but are you saying Curt Swan was working for Broadway at the end?? No. Curt Swan was Jim Shooter's first choice to draw Starseed. He was willing, but Jim gave him a bunch of photos for reference since Jim wanted it based in the real world. It was at that time that Curt said he was too old to be drawing real places and things. He just wanted to draw fictitious places and things. My interpretation is that he wanted to just draw whatever came to his mind without worrying about whether it matched anything in the real world... like the Chrysler building for example. Curt did draw some pages, but eventually Jim had to go with an alternate. In retrospect, I thing Jim wanted his work to be associated with legends. He had Steve Ditko and Barry Windsor Smith at Valiant. He had Ditko on Dark Dominion. He had Len Wein and Dave Cockrum at Defiant. If you think about it, those two guys were instrumental in relaunching the X-men. He had Chris Claremont on Prudence and Caution. Jim always had the green talent he was nurturing, but he also had the very capable creators that he didn't need to nurture. It is my believe that the very low sales of Prudence and Caution being written by Claremont might have been the nail in the coffin for Jim believing Defiant could rebound. If your grade "A" talent isn't bringing in sales, what hope do you have with the guys who are just learning? I've seen some pictures of Curt Swan's art on Starseed... so I know it exists. Q

Powers that Be #1 page 9, a pretty good page, I think. This purchase of Broadway art by BrotherJ is seeming smarter and smarter to me as time goes on.

It's not like I didn't attempt to contact him through email and myspace. He's another artist that won't ever get another dime from me.

The art images that inspired "Hancock!" ;D Nice pages... I wonder if Will Smith is gonna wear the "StarSeed" style cape for the sequel too.
