Tony Bedard on Broadway Comics

I picked up writing work at Broadway comics under Jim Shooter, who turned out to be very, very good to me. After the stories I'd heard at Valiant, it really amazed me that Shooter wasn't quite the monster I'd heard he was, which goes to show you that there's always two sides to a story, and the truth is probably somewhere in between. As for the Valiant relaunch, I guess by that point the original series were so badly damaged that it seemed a complete revamp was the only way to go. A big lesson I picked up from Valiant is that it's easy to squander the good will you build up with readers, and it's very, very hard to win readers back once they are gone.

Cool, I haven't seen this interview before. Gonna check it out. I've been enjoying Bedard's writing on the "R.e.b.e.l.s." series he's been working on for DC now.

I worked with an older gentleman that used to say he knew Tony Bedard and would ask if I had heard of him since I was a comic book collector. At the time I had, but I didn't know what he'd worked on. The gentleman really wanted an opportunity to say hello, but they'd lost touch over the years. The gentleman always migrated towards me because he was just working as a temporary worker and mine was the most technical and skilled job in the department. He liked an intelligent conversation. I think that's how he described it. It ends up that the gentleman was the dad of Tony Bedard's best friend. At least hat's how I understood it. Years later I did contact Tony to pass along the message and ask if he had any Broadway scripts. He did not.

As the Disney ride says... "It's a small world..."

Good quote. I've always felt that this thoughtfulness is typical of his writing as well.
