"Sergio said to go ahead and grant the license. But when he finally saw the printed results, Sergio was simultaneously horrified and amused. Apparently Alfa Yayinlart didn’t have sufficient funds to purchase the negatives of Sergio’s artwork – which would have only cost a few dollars per page -- so they hired their own artist to re-draw the entire story..." www.oddball-comics.com/article.php?story=2009-08-31Defiant1

That's crazy! BTW, Turkish Groo sounds like a horrible ethnic dinner entree....lol There's a young girl from Jordan (born in Irag) that follows me on Twitter. It's amazing how fascinated she is with American pop culture. Her and her friend were putting down a Turkish television network and the "Arabs". It was amusing. Defiant1

I'm the proud owner of a couple Turkish Groos. ;D A friend hooked me up with some. It's pretty funny how they redrew the artwork and sold it over there.
Pretty cool to see the Oddball site back up and running. I heard there was some drama with someone taking the domain name for awhile.

Pretty cool to see the Oddball site back up and running. I heard there was some drama with someone taking the domain name for awhile. I was shocked to see it back. I didn't know why it was down. I see a lot of people let their domain registrations lapse. I think they just forget to renew it. There appears to be a lot of scavengers that look for domains to lapse so they can hold them for ransom. Defiant1

Since we're talking Turkish, here's a pic of the first Turkish issue: It's really the size of a mini-comic compared to the regular issue: Here's Brazil: Finland: Denmark: Mexico: Sweden......(Hi Magnusr!): ;D (Front & Back covers) Norway: Spain: Yugoslavia: I'm missing a a couple of the Planeta trade paperbacks from Spain which are real beauties. They feature original wraparround cover art that hasn't been re-printed in the U.S.

Nice overview. Funny with the different subtitles in different countries. Liked the Danish alliteration "Bar Barbarer" (only barbarians).

If you want to milk money from collectors..... I mean offer high quality desirable collectables... that's the right way to do it.

If you want to milk money from collectors..... I mean offer high quality desirable collectables... that's the right way to do it. Defiant1 It was real pricey but I planned early for it. Notice it's by IDW this time, Dark Horse really dropped the ball in not making one of these since they've been handling Groo for a decade. I have a feeling IDW is going to make extra reprint versions for this one like they do with the multiple Dave Stevens books. *sigh* It's really cool though...it has the original art from the early Marvel/Groo run scanned in large size paper and the inking of the artwork looks like it floats off the page. Almost 3D-ish.

It may sound like I was trying to criticize the package. I'm not. I think a over-sized hardback is a cool upgrade.

There's no real reason why IDW should be able to step up to the plate and generate the same market share or greater each month I read somewhere that Marvel had cancelled some books. I'm wondering if we'll see another tightening of the belt in the industry again. Defiant1

Vikingspawn, Was wondering if this fell into the scope of your collecting... I'm not really wanting to part with mine, but figured you might want to look for one. Defiant1 Those mags are really cool. I actually do have that one with Groo and Bone from a couple years ago. ;D Those "Aspiring Cartoonists" and also the "National Cartoonist Society" programs are incredibly hard to get. I heard the "NCS" people give members a hard time when they sell their programs on ebay or something. I found a couple of the old newsletters with artwork on them here and there over the years but none of the awards programs. I'm hunting for the 2009 and 1983 years of the NCS awards program shows but those are impossible to get. Every once in awhile, an old member will post one on ebay but I haven't seen any for years. Cool covers on some of them. Here's one program cover from 2009: I gotta dig up the scan for the 1983 cover..

I think the magazine I posted could be ordered easily. The one you posted is probably much rarer. I bought a set and have about 8 issues or so.

Defiant1 I have a couple issues of "Aspiring Cartoonist" I need to revisit again and see what was on the covers. Here's the 1983 NCS Program cover art...aka "The Reuben Awards Program"...or aka "The Cartoonist!" It's a big scan but you can see the details of the giant crowd scene:

Cool search link...I think the he drew something that was printed in this "Rocky And His Fiendish Friends" #1 comic from the '60s: www.comics.org/issue/17207/cover/4/I would search for that book before every once in awhile and remember he has something in that pink cover comic. That's probably where he has a Boris/Natacha story in there. I remember reading some stories about his time at "Laugh In." Those Laugh Ins remind me of this Austin Powers tv special:

He's been doing Shrek and he made $10 million for one of those. He's probably priced himself out of the market. He made $25 million on an Austin Powers movie by getting a share of the gross. Interesting. Defiant1

That is asinine! What is wrong with these publishers? Defiant1 Yea I'm surprised if Sergio really endorses that price point. A commission page in color like that sheet is 300+ at conventions and the book itself is about 100. $1200 is obnoxious.

Regardless, I think it's stupid to buy the book when you could get something better one on one. Defiant1

I don't know why anyone would want original artwork in a book vs. being on something that can be easily framed. I guess I'm saying I wouldn't pay above market rates for art to get it in a format that is less convenient. Defiant1
