I just started submitting to CGC again, and had a coupon that came with my membership to submit 4 books. One of the books I submitted was a Dark Dominion 10. I got that particular copy from the books I bought from Corvette Jim. I just shipped the books off to CGC today, and I'll post here on what grade it received when I get it back.

I decided to make the top post in this thread a list of all Defiant comics that have been submitted to CGC, along with the grades.

I finished going through every Defiant title in the CGC census, and have listed all slabbed Defiants, along with grades, in the top post. There have been 51 Defiant comic books slabbed.

Good! No Charlemagne #4's slabbed. My published letter can still be read!

Good! No Charlemagne #4's slabbed. My published letter can still be read! Defiant1 For a few years now I've been wanting to put together a slabbed run of Defiant Comics. If I make the move to attempt one, I should end up getting a copy of that book slabbed. I didn't know about your published letter. I'm going to have to check that out.

Looking over the list of slabbed Defiants, I'd say the most desirable slabbed Defiant issue is the Birth of the Defiant Universe in CGC 9.9, followed by the two copies of that book in CGC 9.8. However, the Plasm 0 in CGC 9.4 is very desirable too. It's a miracle that book could be removed from the Previews issue it came attached to, and still given a 9.4 by CGC. Or, is there another version of Plasm 0 that didn't come in Previews that could be?

About an hour ago I did a search of eBay for Defiant slabs for sale. There were two, and not surprisingly both were Warriors of Plasm 1s in CGC 9.8. One was on a 7 day auction and was about to close, and I was the only bidder at 27.95 including shipping. I might've been able to get my own copy graded for a little less, but there was an inherent risk in trying that, and I felt it best to just try to win the eBay auction outright by meeting the minimum bid. So, I have a Warriors of Plasm 1 in CGC 9.8, and a Dark Dominion 10 on its way to CGC. My Defiant slabbed run has officially begun!

I checked the CGC registry, and was able to find one Defiant Comics set. Someone has a Warriors of Plasm set listed, and the only book in that set is a Warriors of Plasm #1 in CGC 9.8. For whatever reason that book was good for 132 registry points. I plan on registering my Defiant Comics set with the registry within a few weeks. Obviously no one has ever attempted an entire Defiant Comics slabbed set, and that fact, coupled with the fact I've never built a slabbed set of any kind before makes this a way cool endeavor for me.

I had picked up the comics that day and I was sitting on a sofa reading them by the only lamp in the room. My family and me were going to go to dinner together. I think my aunt was in town. I finished reading the story and I was 80% through the letters column which is the last page. My family starts walking out the door. Someone says "C'mon. Let's go. Get up." I look up. I look back down. I think to myself... "Do I need to finish reading the letters page?" I decide that the short time it'll take to finish won't delay anything too much. I'd already been waiting on them for a half-hour. So I start reading the last letter. My jaw drops. It was my letter. I almost didn't know it was there. If I hadn't held out a few more seconds to finish the page.. I'd have never seen it. Defiant1

The book is not cropped, therefore you'd have to tear pages at the bottom to separate them and read it. It would be a tough comic to grade. Defiant1

That was a good letter you had published in Charlemagne #4. It was fun getting a glimpse into the mindset you had back when Defiant was publishing. We were all so much younger then.

It occurs to me this project will be especially difficult, as it's unlikely I will be able to purchase any Defiant slabs that have been slabbed by someone else. I will have to rely on submitting virtually every book myself, pulling from my Defiant hoard. While I have multiple copies of many Defiant issues, there will be a high percentage of books Defiant put out that I have no 9.8 candidates for.

Seems to me that there is very little demand for Defiant slabs and if there was, I would think a lot of high grade copies.would find its way to being graded. Most everybody that had a decent amount probably had them bag and boarded from the day they got them and hardly looked at them any more.

The same seller that I won my Warriors of Plasm #1 in CGC 9.8 had another copy listed for 44.95 in his store. After I won mine, he ended the other copy because ''item no longer available". This might mean he had an offer for the book outside eBay, he might've changed his mind about selling it, or he may have ended it and will relist it again. With this development, there are now no slabbed Defiants for sale on the Bay, as far as I can tell.

I could be wrong about this, but in my opinion most dealers and even collectors have probably given up on Defiants increasing in price. They've dumped them into quarter bins, and just not generally cared for them. I don't think there are a lot of the lower print run Defiants sitting out there in 9.6 or 9.8. I remember when the New Universe got so much disrespect, and none of the issues sold for more than 1.50. Now some of them sell for more, and some of those later issues aren't found listed in NM+ or better on eBay ever.

After I bought Mile High out of some of the later Defiant issues a couple years ago, Chuck raised his prices on them significantly. Case in point, this is the only Warriors of Plasm 13 listed as nm for sale on eBay. (Chuck has it at 14.40, for those who don't care to click on the link). Over the last couple years I also bought out mycomicshop and searchlight comics on this issue in nm. As an aside that I've mentioned elsewhere on the board, I also bought CorvetteJim's Defiant comics. Mycomicshop still has a few copies of Warriors of Plasm 13 in vf at 1.30* ea, which I happen to think is underpriced. Within a couple years I expect mycomicshop to raise their price on some of the later issues of Defiant. I've studied them over the course of time on similar books before, having observed what they did on New Universe back issues and Milestone back issues, particularly the harder to find ones, and have studies what they've done over the course of time on other prices as well. Mile High tends to raise prices too fast, and mycomicshop tends to raise prices too slow, in my opinion. *I check mycomicshop's price on Warriors of Plasm 13 several times a month, and when I wrote this post I assumed they were still at 1.30 on Warriors of Plasm 13 in vf, as I just checked last week. However, they have just raised their price on this book to 1.75. www.ebay.com/itm/WARRIORS-OF-PLASM-13-Near-Mint-Comics-Book-/281156808579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4176406f83

UPDATE: I hadn't checked mycomicshop's price on Warriors of Plasm #13 in vf in a week or two, and just noticed they raised it on their eBay listings four days ago to 1.75, and on their webstie to 2.10. Very interesting timing, as I've obviously just began discussing this on the board. According to their eBay listing, they have 5 copies in stock of Warriors of Plasm 13 in vf. I've of the bought them out of a listing on eBay, and find those quantities listed in their eBay store of a book are often the actual quantities they have in stock.

Compiling a set would make someone else want one. Defiant1 Also, I've always believed sooner or later nostalgia will kick in in the marketplace when it comes to Defiant. I'm skeptical unless Jim actually starts doing something actively in the industry. At the peak of my traffic here, prices did rise. With nothing new being brought forth, almost all of my Defiant related web traffic has died. Broadway has always been a marginal draw to get people here. The majority of my web traffic on all my sites is is people looking for EC scans and info. Charlton is my second biggest attraction. That's not saying that web discussion here couldn't pique people's curiosity, but for the most part there's nothing new to bring forward. Controversy and news are the two biggest draws to a comic book messageboard. I can't imagine there's too much controversy relating to Defiant Comics so that leaves very little reason for people to discuss Defiant and visit. Defiant1
