As you can see, I've started a thread to list and discuss detectives in comics. I will keep the list in the top post. Any help and discussion would be appreciated.

Ms. Tree was written by Max Allan Collins, and drawn by Terry Beatty. The original publisher was Eclipse, who published an initial series of several issues which I'm not sure was ever intended to be ongoing, and then launched an ongoing series. The first few issues of their ongoing series was called Ms. Tree Thrilling Detective Adventures, but that title was shortened to Ms. Tree. The series was soon switched to Renegade, who continued it until the final issue, number 50. DC Comics published a quarterly Ms. Tree book for awhile after that. Collins is a prolific novelist in the hard-boiled detective genre, and staunch defender and friend of Mike Hammer creator Mickey Spillane.

Here's a link to some info on Johnny Dynamite. I discovered him when a number of his stories were reprinted in the Ms. Tree series. He's hard-boiled, with obvious Mike Hammer influences. Charlton published a few Johnny Dynamite stories, which I believe were the only ones that were governed by the Comics Code. www.thrillingdetective.com/dynamite.html

Disclaimer: any help on this list might be preserved and/or copied by me (just the list, not any discussion... I don't want to lose the list) and used on a message board I've got that has no posts on it yet. That might or might not change in the future. Thanks.

I've never read anything with Dakota North in it, but I know the character is a female who debuted not long after Ms. Tree did in a Marvel mini-series and is now part of Marvel's universe. I've been meaning to pick that series up. Max Allan Collins took a few shots at the character in Ms. Tree editorials.

Mike Hammer was printed in newspaper strips in the 50s, which were later reprinted in their entirety in two volumes by Ken Pierce books. I have volume 1.

I've collected and read all 50 issues from the Eclipse/Renegade run of Ms. Tree, but haven't owned or read the initial shorter Eclipse series or any of the DC quarterly issues. I need to get those.

Dakota North Johnny Dynamite Mike Hammer Ms. Tree Johnny Dynamite has a little following believe it or not. I know of the others, but none really excite me. I really liked the mystery stories that Amazing Montage/Known Associates published. No collector value, but the stories were a fun and interesting read. Defiant1

Thanks for the posts. I especially appreciate the Charlton covers featuring Johnny Dynamite. There might be another one. I seem to recall them skipping an issue number on one title and online databases thinking that would be a Johnny Dynamite issue if it existed. Ultimately, I put more trust in the sites that said it didn't exist. Charlton was set back by a flood in the 50's. Either the print runs dropped or the books didn't survive. I haven't mapped out dates and which titles are rare yet. Defiant1

I'd forgotten there was a Johnny Dynamite mini published by Dark Horse, from the team of Collins and Beatty.

It looks like those two issues of Foreign Intrigues featuring Johnny Dynamite (which I was unaware of until now) are difficult to find, and out of my price range.

Yes, very difficult to find and even more difficult to find in higher grades at all. I think this is a good deal. www.ebay.com/itm/like/231120544888?lpid=82I'd seriously consider buying it at a show for that price. I don't buy anything off eBay. Defiant1

Would "Mickey Spillane's Mike Danger " by Teckno fit the scope of what you are trying to list? I assume he's a detective too.

Not mine!
Johnny Dynamite supposedly appeared in the following sequence..
Dynamite (Comic Media) #3-9 Johnny Dynamite (Charlton) #10-12 Foreign Intrigue (Charlton) #14-15
Charlton acquired the character from Comic Media. The numbering was kept the same through all three titles except there is no #13. That's the missing issue that some sites list.
The rights were acquired by a Max Alan Collins (?) and published as a backup feature in Ms. Tree. Later Dark Horse published a series also.

Added to the top post. Thanks. I may have to check out the Maze Agency. I recall seeing it around in stores, or perhaps on order forms.

According to BrotherJ's linked article, Mike W. Barr, the Maze Agency writer, was an Ellery Queen fan, and even had Ellery appear in an issue of the Maze Agency.
