This post reveals possible storylines that were planned beyond the published issues of Good Guys and Dog of War. If you have not read these series, you might want to read them before reading the content in this thread.. . . . . . .(Spoiler Space) . . . . . . .
In Sept 2003 at Dragon Con, I met George Jeanty. He was the artist for "Dog of War". He's done a lot of stuff since.
We talked about the direction Dogs of War was to go. My memory is a year old and this is based on even older memories he had, but the plot made my jaw drop.
Shooter (the character) as we know dished out ruthless vigilante justice. The Good Guys were a bunch of positive upbeat kids trying to play the hero. According to George, the Shooter character was planned to chase down some bad guys. Those bad guys slip into a room. At the same time, one of the Good Guy kids enters the same room from a different doorway. I think the kids were chasing down the same bad guys. Shooter rushes in and shoots first. He accidently kills one of the Good Guys kids. I thought "wow". But it didn't end there. Shooter supposedly gets so distraught from killing one of the kids, that he falls into a sea of self pity and shame. He climbs to the top of the tallest building he can find and throws himself from it to commit suicide. That was supposed to be the final issue of the series. That is all the spoilers George told me, and I'm using my own words and memory to paraphrase it.
This is just proof in my mind that Jim Shooter was back into the creative process (after having been tied up in the courtrooms) and that the quality was going to go a notch better and more intricate very quickly.
As I pondered the proposed Dogs of War series ending, it created a new flood of thoughts. What if Shooter wanted to jump from the building to kill himself..... and he lived. What if his near invincibility saved him? That would have been the mecahanism of struggle in his life to make him tow the line like any of the more traditional heroes. He might start considering the impliications of his actions and behave properly. of course there would always be an unpredictable side like Wolverine had at Marvel.
Well, that all I know on this topic. Comments welcome.

In a way, it would have been a type of "origin" for Shooter, but if that were the last book of the series, I don't know. I would have enjoyed seeing how it all played out. Even though the series would have ended, it still could have been a "beginning" for Shooter. I don't think anything like that has ever been done in a comic before, not that I'm aware of anyway. As crazy as some of the Defiant characters seemed to be, many of them displayed a very human escence.

Yeah, it could've been an origin... but we may never know... Defiant1

I think the Good Guy was supposed to be Scrag, who from, hints in the comic and in Diamond solicitations, was supposed to leave the group because of a dispute over a gun he picked up in the next to last published issue of the series. The solicitations had him pegged as the "The Good Guy gone bad" and I think he was even mentioned in the solicitation for the final Dogs of War issue. They used the term "miniseries" for Dogs of War late in the series and the first few words of the first issue were "And now for a darker ride..." or something like that. Rides do have ends. If Shooter had lived I can't imagine what they would've done with him since the creative team was moving on to something else and the rooster of planned books was pretty darn full. Though the thought of Shooter waking up in the morge, realizing he's still alive would have been amusing (if their had been another Jack Boniface Shadowman series, that's one of my theories on how that one would've began too:)) However, here's one interesting mystery/theory I just remembered: Right when Defiant began David Lapham created a "grim masked vigilante" for a lithograph colored by Janet Jackson named Mongrel (a dog name, hmmm). Mongrel was originally supposed to become a series at some point down the road and Lapham said he would write and draw it once his writting skills developed. Four possibilities here: 1) Their was a "Mongrel Rude" in Plasm and he goes to Earth and this would've been his book 2) Lapham changed his mind and Dogs of War was a replacement for Mongrel 3) Dogs of War was a lead in to Mongrel and Mongrel is Shooter 4) the two series are unrelated. I don't suppose anyone happens to have a good picture of the Mongrel lithograph? That sucker looked d**n awesome in the tiny b&w Previews picture.

Yep, you got. The anti-society Mongrels in that issue took their name from the revoloutionary Mongrel Rude, maybe they used to be part of his former gang or maybe they were just inspired by his past retoric. I just emailed you a copy of the little b &w picture of the Mongrel lithograph I have.

Kind of a late note on this thread but I just happened to be looking through my Plasm tradepaperback and saw early sketches of the Plasm characters by Lapham with possible names for the characters beside some of them ("Defiance?" was beside Glory). Beside Shooter (who was labeled "soldier guy") their was the longest list of possible names which included one name that had stars beside it. The name was "Mongrel". Take that for what you will...

Well, I didn't ever mean to imply you were wrong. I just find it more ironic that their first release... the Mongrel print itself... would feature the one character I liked the best. I'm still rereading all the Defiant comics one by one and I'm writing a synopsis of each one. I haven't touched any Plasm yet. I'm trying to knock out the peripheral characters 1st. I figure if I save the most known for last, it'll give people a reason to come back. Also, I type with one finger and transcribing the editorials has been hell for me. I am trying to keep all the original typos and not add any of my own... a very difficult task for me. Defiant1

I appreciate the comments that were posted here about DOGS. One correction: Jim Shooter gave me the plots that he wanted for issues #1 and #8. I wrote and plotted the remainder of the stories in the mini-series.

I appreciate the comments that were posted here about DOGS. One correction: Jim Shooter gave me the plots that he wanted for issues #1 and #8. I wrote and plotted the remainder of the stories in the mini-series. Thanks for the post. The credits I have listed with each issue were pulled straight from the published comic (whether accurate or not). I can add your comments to the notes for those issues. I would assume that Jim Shooter's credits in a couple of those middle issues would relate to synchronizing continuity between the titles and not the guts of what was written and plotted. One of my favorite scenes in any comic that I've ever read was DOW#2 when Shooter barfed after beating up the female child pornographer.... a 2nd time. If any imaginary world can ever be truly believable.... disturbingly believable, that scene was. There are many popular writers in comics that fail to give each character their own unique personality. I felt as though you accomplished that task exceptionally well in Dogs of War. After 10 years I still insist that people go back and read this series. If they seem reluctant, I have even gone so far as to give them copies of the first few issues. I own a lot of the artwork for this series, but unfortunately one of my best friends bought the page of Shooter barfing. It was his favorite scene too. I would greatly appreciate it if you could email me at

Thanks for the kind words. I'll post to you personally later.
As for scripts, someplace on my old computer are the following:
- Dogs 1-8 - "Origin of Chasm" 8 page for Dark Dominion - "The Great Grimmax" #1 and #2

There are some fans (like myself) that would really like to get some closure on the series and know what we missed. Since I now own photocopies of the original art to #6, I could actually reunite the script and artwork. I'd be willing to provide some compensation for your efforts. Please let me know if that would be possible. Defiant1

I don't check the board for a couple days, and the writer of one of my favorite comic runs of all time posts! Loved your Dogs of War stuff, Mr. Holcomb! If you did contribute the scripts or even just some synopsises of the stuff you listed it would be a dream come true!
I never knew you wrote the origin of Chasm. It makes me even more disappointed that River Group never printed it. Who was the artist on that one?
What did you do after Defiant, and what are you working on now? I got an Eternal Warrior special that was set in WW II that you did and that's the last comic I have with your name on it.

IWhat did you do after Defiant, and what are you working on now? I got an Eternal Warrior special that was set in WW II that you did and that's the last comic I have with your name on it. Mr. Holcomb wrote Acclaim Comics' "VH-2" Eternal Warriors, which is one of my favorite comic series. Detailed, intricate plots, subtle revelations of things to come, while paying homage to the "VH-1" series that started it all. It was an epic saga staring immortal people in spandex. And if you think the people around you now drive you nuts, imagine if they were around you forever. I'd go into more detail (like how do you torture someone who cannot die? And how do you kill an immortal?, both of which Mr. Holcomb answered), but this is a Defiant board. Great stuff, every single issue. I'd highly recommend tracking them down and checking them out. Pup

Origins/Chasm was never published, but I think the inks might still belong to someone. Great Grimmax did get drawn but I forget by whom.
As for other stories, I worked with Acclaim, doing MtG: Elder Dragon series with Doug Wheatley, the KILLER INSTINCT game spin-off (6 issues, I think), the ETERNAL WARRIORS mini, including a screenplay. After that, I worked with the great Len Wein on the animated series War Planets (known now as Shadow Raiders) which continues to run internationally, and in America on Showtime.
I also worked with Stan Lee at Marvel, rewriting and updating several of his PROFESSOR XAVIER AND THE X-MEN tales.
I apreciate the kind words. My time at Defiant and Acclaim are very precious to me. Please post here if you have any questions and I'll look in on you here from time to time..
I do quite a bit of work for Hollywood, and am currently considering a couple of comic series offer.

I've considered setting up a category for any creators that feel inclined to visit the message board. I could have a category established just for the purpose of asking you questions or letting you tell people about your current projects. I could do the same for Greg Boone and Janet Jackson since they've posted here also. and.... as far as staying exactly on topic... I don't care. My messageboard is intended to flow like a conversation. The categories are just starting points. Valiant discussion in the Defiant category doesn't bother me in the least. Defiant1

...which you've been promissing to me for about a decade, Art! Hey, Defiant1 -- nice board here! I decided long ago to NOT hold my breath for anything. People mean well, but just about everyone is busy and has their reason for not following through with contributions they've offered (or in some cases promised.) Acquiring the abundance of unpublished content here just involved asking the right people at the right times. Some would call it luck. I just finished scanning most of the pencils (photocopies) to Dogs of War #6. I'd like to have them posted by this weekend, but that may not be possible. It looks like I may still be missing page 13 and page 24 of that story. Regardless, I'm still happy to have collected the unpublished items I have. One thing I don't do is beg. I never have, I never will. It's not my style. My goal was to make an archive... a tribute to Defiant Comics. No one else had done it and the comics were not getting the respect they deserved. In some cases I've shelled my own cash just to make this stuff available. I have plenty of other areas where I can spend my money to get more in return. This site is as much work as it has been fun. Nobody is paying me to do this and noboby can bribe me for nice words. Once I get the info for each book completed and set, I'm probably going to set the messageboard on autopilot and set out to work on doing non-comics related projects.... something else to occupy my time. So, that's my current plans. Check back as I start trying to finish dotting the i's and crossing the t's. Defiant 1

thanks

One member here claims to have emailed him and never got a response. I have not communicated with him in at least 3 years, probably 4. Most likely I will eventually email him. Jim is aware of the site. He reportedly knows that some of the scripts I've posted are online. I've been told he has no problem with it. Be sure to check the Broadway Comics section of this message board for a link to an "extremely rare" Broadway comic drawn by Ernie Colon. A recent contact within the last few days may also lead to even more unpublished art and scripts. Be sure to check the other topics on the messageboard for further updates. Thanks. Defiant1

Another reference to the Mongrel series I just found. The solicitation for one of the last card sets Rivergroup solicited, a general one on the Defiant Universe which included things from upcoming series(the ads for it showed the contents of Jim Shooter's brain ). Mongrel was listed as one of those upcoming series along with Dogs of Wars, Glory, Charlemagne, War Dancer, and Prudence & Caution. So atleast, according to the card set, Mongrel was still in the works when they thought up Dogs of War so that would indicate that Dogs wasn't a replacement for Mongrel. So it's either not Shooter, Shooter after his suicide attempt, or the solicitation is just full of crap

I never once read the solicitations or the backs of the cards. I just don't get joy getting my story that way. When I'm checking links, I do find myself listening to the Plasm Audio which is online. I'll play it almost everytime. I'm probably the only one who has clicked the link. Defiant1

Between the the name Mongel with stars beside it with the character sketch of Shooter in the Plasm trade, the similarities in title names and characters, and the fact that it was still in the works, it sounds like Mongrel could've really been Shooter. It may explain why Dogs of War came out of no where. It wasn't listed in the advance press, interviews, ect with all the other titles. They advertised titles up to Glory (and Mongrel) before they even started publishing but with no mention of Dogs of War. If Lapham needed more time before he felt he was ready to do Mongrel (or they felt they needed to wait to put out the title) coming up with a miniseries to fill the time and bridge the story gap makes sense. Just a theory.

*bump* I was looking for a thread with "Mongrel" talk and found this one. ;D I noticed the sketch page from the "Plasm" trade that has a sketch for the "Lt. Mazerov" character with the list of names and "Mongrel" being on the bottom of the list there: Hey Defiant1, Did Art ever come through with any scripts of Chasm, Dogs of War or Grimmax books mentioned up there? I didn't know Great Grimmax had inked pages of issues 1 and 2.... Seeing those in any form would be worth a forum project. ;D

I didn't know Great Grimmax had inked pages of issues 1 and 2.... Seeing those in any form would be worth a forum project. ;D Art like several other Defiant creators stopped in once or twice and visited without keeping their promises. It appears that the creators stopped by while there was a lull in their workload and their good intentions never panned out. I don't think I would have gotten the Defiant stuff from Georges if not for him living in Atlanta and me running into him periodically at comic shops. He tells me his plate is full and to be honest, I'm the only one he meets that brings up his days at Defiant. I'm sure that Art doesn't encounter a lot of Defiant fans, so it's probably not on his mind. I've never heard any mention of unpublished Grimmax pages being out there, but I do believe they probably exist. I was hoping to see some unpublished Grimmax pages for sale when I met Dave Cockrum's widow selling the Grimmax #0 pages. I don't really know who would have drawn pages for Grimmax #1 & #2. I guess Jose Delbo is a possibility. John Ridgeway is another. One search I have made repeatedly is for Glory artwork be it published or unpublished. I'm a fan of Val Mayerik's art so I've assumed all these years that he might have some unpublished Glory pages. I'd be proud to own a published page by him. Over time it became evident that Defiant creators were jacking up the prices of their art after I created my site. Pieces that would have been $5 before my site existed had asking prices of $100 after my site existed. For this reason, I quit buying published pages. I'd be pretty stupid to promote these guys work and then buy their art pages at 20-fold what I could have bought them for had I not promoted their work. I have a million other ways to piss my money away without investing all the time I had invested in my site. I'm really only interested in getting the unpublished stuff online so fans can see it. I own a lot of art, but I'm not an art collector per se. I felt really screwed over when Defiant promoted the whole schism crossover. I felt that it was a crappy thing to do to fans and that getting the unpublished work online would at least get the fans on the same page as what the creators had in their minds when the rug and financing was pulled out from under their feet. I feel like the fans are owed a glimpse of what was in the works because I would not have invested even a dime in their books if you'd told me none of the stories would have an ending. You don't see me buying New Universe comics...and that's the reason. I know the fate of the venture and I have no interest in spending sums of cash for something that was derailed from the original vision. Defiant1

Those unpublished "Schism" books would be amazing to see finished even if only to tie up the Defiant Universe books if anything. The "Unity 2000" (for issues 4-6) project at the VCS sounds promising so I hope the old creators think about a possible "Schism" project too.
I'm surprised there aren't any more "Plasm" fans out there clamoring for the unprinted stuff. Even from JC Vaughn's old post up there, sounds like he wants to see those Chasm/Dogs/Grimmax scripts too! Another reason I hope the next Dark horse/Shooter books are successful is for the old Defiant stuff to be brought back. Same for Broadway. It'd be great to see a re-introduction of the old characters into the next GK imprint too but i'm always curious about those unpublished works.....and that 8-page Chasm story. Too many cliffhangers left over from the old runs.

Too many cliffhangers left over from the old runs. Again though, after my site started promoting this art, the creators saw $$$. Original art that might have been in the hands of just the penciler and the inker started getting sold piecemeal one page at a time. The prices were jacked up and nobody could afford to but the lots in bulk. Pulling all that art together is in my opinion a hopeless quest. If the art does exist in one place, my understanding is that it's probably locked in some outdated digital printer format from the 90's. I played hell getting the images off the Defiant screensaver disc and the best I could do was make screen captures. The only viewer for the filetype Defiant used had no export feature. I can't even print from the bass-ackwards viewer I dug up. I own 8.5" x 11" photocopies of the pencils from DOW #6 as well as a few scattered inked and penciled pages. Recreating that story might be possible if Art Holcomb had produced the script. New versions of Word won't by default open real old word files due to some security risks that Microsoft uncovered. A less saavy computer user might not realize someone like me can get them opened and saved in a newer format. It takes some digging, but I can get it done. I bought ALL the artwork for Broadway's Makeshift series that penciler Tim Hamilton owned. I bought it in bulk with the hopes of recreating those stories. I own the scripts to Makeshift #1-3. If someone could coax Dick Giordano into selling the rest of the art for issues #1 & #2, those could be far more easily recreated than Schism. Makeshift #3 had barely been started, so a script is the best available on that.Charles Yoakum said the art to an unpublished War Dancer comic was lost, but Pauline Weiss said she has it. J.G. Jones gave me his email address and promised to dig up all his old Defiant art for me I wrote him and he never responded. A year later his art showed up on an art brokers site and I have zero interest in ever buying another piece of original art from him. The art only had value to me in bulk. Defiant1

I noticed those JG Jones "Schism" pages on the Fanfare site. All watermarked up. www.fanfare-se.com/ArtistGalleryTitles.asp?ArtistId=132The "Makeshift" pages would be great to see. That's what gets me....all this great stuff still goes unpublished. Maybe one of the associate Dark Horse editors will check this site out for future collections reference. Shooter's '90s stuff would work awesome as archives editions or Omnibus collections. I'd settle for underground fanzines of the unseen stuff too. ;D
