Well, my local comic shop is SOMEWHAT open...
Let me explain, they were supposed to be open May 1st, but I think they delayed it until either Thursday or Friday. I called Friday and finally got my buddy at the shop on the phone. When he asked if they were open, his answer was "well, we're kind of open". He didn't really expand upon it too much on the phone, so I figured I'd just go in Saturday, get my Free Comic Day books and see what was going on.
When I first got there, I was impressed and depressed at the same time. Impressed because they had a LOT more room at their new location, depressed because they didn't even look like they were halfway done moving in. Most of the stuff was boxed up in the back of the store and there was a ton more boxes in the back room area.
I also finally found out what he meant by "kind of" open. Apparently, they have to get some kind of permit to open at that location, so before they can do so, someone from the city has to come out and inspect the place. The problem is they really can't legally sell stuff until they get their permit. From what he told me, the city they are in only has one person who does these inspections and he only does one a day! The guy is so backed up, he won't get to the comic shop until May 18th!
Another note, one I found troubling, as well. They apparently did know in advance they weren't going to be open this past month, so they didn't get anything from Diamond the whole time they were closed. They didn't even get books this past week, so no Free Comic Book Day books for me!
So much for getting my issues I missed from them! The guy thought he told me that and he may well have. Luckily, I think I got caught up between the titles I have decided to not get anymore and the books I got from another local place.
Very weird situation, to make it worse, he told me that the chain store here was telling people they went out of business. I hope they can recuperate, but it doesn't look good. I'm trying to think of ways I might be able to help them.
