I picked up this comic the other day. I was shocked by the indicia. I thought I'd read everything at the Atlas/Seaboard website. I don't recall anything about Atlas publishing a Marvel Comic. Isn't Charles Goodman the son that started Atlas comics in the 70's? He's listed as the publisher. I've had an interest in these gag format comics since compiling a Charlton checklist and seeing that their survival rate on the market was not very good. When I saw that Marvel had published one, I had to grab it. You don't see these very often. Defiant1 (repost from the comicspriceguide.com forum)

You know Ive actually seen one of these before and I didnt think nothing of it. Well, I wont go that far. It did catch my eye and I remember thinking it was a Marvel Comic I havent seen before and it was a little odd. But like a dummy, instead of truly paying attention to how unique it was, I thought it a lesser addition to my collection and walked away from it. Today I would give this a lot more attention and given the chance at it with the same price (a couple of bucks), I would easily buy it today.

I paid more than a couple of bucks. I think these were aimed more for adults and didn't get produced in as high of numbers. I'd love to start going back abd buying the Charlton gag series. The problem is that they are very hard to find and when you do they are poor/good. Evidently people read them more.

Quite a few of these on eBay, hope you didn't pay too much as they don't seem to be very hard to find.

I haven't been pinching pennies as much lately, There is so little I want that I've just been buying it if it's accessible. defiant1

That seems so adult compared to anything else at the time. I think those are some gems there Q. I liked the one where he isnt leaving unless Shirley goes too. And the real adult one is can I play with the boy if I find one that is smooth. Pretty decent stuff. I wish I had a few of these. If I see them again cheap, Im going to pick a few up.

By #3 the jokes were pathetic and there was less to read. This one was okay.

Was Marvel's Atlas still existent this late (late 60's)? I thought Atlas morphed into Marvel with FF#1??? (Admittedly could be wrong on that one, not 100% sure). It certainly way too early for the 1970's short lived Atlas line. So, where does this comic actually belong?
Just as I typed that, I got out my Overstreet annual. It says:
Groovy (Cartoon Comics - not CCA approved) Marvel Comics Group: March 1968 - No 3. July, 1968
1 - Monkees, Ringo Starr, Sonny & Cher, Mamas & Papas photos GD VG FN VF VF/NM NM- 10 20 30 62 96 130
2, 3 7 14 21 40 60 80

Not approved by the code. Probably why Marvel didn't put their name on it.

This was published by the people that became Atlas/Seaboard. www.atlasarchives.com/Martin Goodman was setting his son up to be in charge at Marvel. They didn't stay true to his wishes so he started Atlas/Seaboard. This was evidently published by Martin Goodman's son before the problems developed..... before the split. Q

Atlas/Seaboard. I read a high percentage of the books they published. I had a lot of hopes for that company.

Q I mention both Atlas's in my post. I was noting that it was too late to be the original Atlas that morphed into Marvel. And it was too early to be the 1970's Atlas that was short lived (I sometimes struggle to remember the Seaboard part of it). But I was actually mentioning both Atlas's. From all indications though, the Groovy's were strickly an attempt at Marvel grabbing some Adult readers and hence, no CCA approval. Neat books in my opinion. Off the beaten path is what makes it so.

It was obviously before Goodman retired. Earl at cpg noted that Marvel published comics under several names. I suggesed that is probablt why the older comics say "Marvel Comics Group".
