Here's some flasbback text from the official Catfish Comics web site in April of 1999:

The SINNAMON ARCHIVES Oh dear. THE SINNAMON ARCHIVES #1 was cancelled last year. Now what? Well ... there were some fine stories just waiting to go, so odds are good these stories will be pressed into service as backup stories in future issues of SINNAMON. That gives us an excuse to keep this page online. If you're a first time visitor, an explanation is in order. Back in late 1995, Angelo Furlan and Nick Poliwko were swapping ideas, when the notion of a Golden Age Sinnamon popped up. It was along the lines of ... "What if there had been a Sinnamon fighting in World War Two"? After all, there was a slew of Golden Age characters - why not create a history for SINNAMON? So we did. Read on to see how far we carried this little joke. [Golden Age Sinnamon] [Sinn-Dy's Page] The Story behind the SINNAMON ARCHIVES How it all began ... To be honest, I thought it was a joke at first. I received an e-mail message from a fellow who said he had bought a copy of SINNAMON #6 after coming across the Catfish Comics Web site. He asked if I was aware that a now defunct comic company, Peerless Publications, had published comics using the very same name for nearly 20 years starting back in 1942. Taking this very lightly, I wrote back that I certainly knew all about Peerless, since everyone was aware they had also published 1940’s versions of Spider-Man, Spawn, and Lady Death. The reply came back that Peerless never published a Spider-Man comic, although the writer did enjoy reading the Lee/Ditko series back in his youth. Neither Spawn or Lady Death were familiar to him. Thinking the joke had gone far enough, I did not respond. Three weeks later, I received a package in the mail. I don’t think I can find the words to express my amazement when I opened it to find photocopies of a number of comic books. Each one was about the exploits of a heroine named Sinnamon. And the cover dates said it all: these books had been published during the 1940's and 1950's. After some meetings with descendants of the publisher of Peerless, this is how things played themselves out. Seeing how the company published their last comic back in June 1958, there wasn't much that their representatives could do to me. But rather than risk having the lawyers duke it out, I decided to compromise. So, in April 1997, Catfish will publish THE SINNAMON ARCHIVES, a collection of some of these hitherto unknown stories of a previous version of SINNAMON. The first issue will feature the Golden Age SINNAMON in action, along with two other stories. The fact that I'd like to have the book ship on April 1 shouldn't have any significance at all. SINNAMON ARCHIVES #1 will also contain some articles on the history of Peerless/Priceless/ Precious Publications (sort of a checkered history, you might say) and profiles of the men who created the original SINNAMON. And possibly some other stuff. It's a fascinating glimpse at a legacy few of us knew SINNAMON had. Check back for more details over the months to come I'd like to thank everyone who's e-mailed me with their support in this situation. I don't think our right to publish SINNAMON was ever in jeopardy, but thanks for caring. And might I suggest you pick up a copy of the ARCHIVES? It looks like it could be a fun read. |
