Here is a list of the Defiant titles I have at home:
The Origin of the Defiant Universe #1
War Dancer #1-6
Warriors of Plasm: Home for the Holidays Graphic Novel
Warriors of Plasm #1-13
Plasm #0 Card Binder (complete set, including Splatterball issue, bonus Level One Foil Card)
Dark Dominion #0 Card Binder (missing cards #16, 21, 27, 42, 46, and 65) (includes Dark Dominion Quantum View Lens, bonus Level One #9 card, bonus card featuring Michael Alexander and The Good Guys)
On Friday, July 11, 2003, I managed to conduct a brief telephone interview with Mr. James C. Shooter himself. I got his phone number from Phobos Entertainment. He is now doing freelance consulting and is very busy. He is working on a project with the creator of Men in Black.
My conversation was very brief. I told him how much I enjoyed his work on both Valiant and Defiant Comics. He said he did not have a problem with me designing a role playing game based on Defiant Comics, from a non-commercial standpoint. If it was actually commercial, then there would be problems. Defiant was sold to Golden Books, which became bankrupt and Defiant was then sold to Random House. The problem is, Random House is not aware of the fact that they own the trademarks to Defiant Comics. Also, Solar, Turok and Magnus: Robot Fighter are owned by Random House, while Shadowman, Harbinger, XO, etc. are owned by
Acclaim.
The financial and business problems he had was the reason why both Valiant and Defiant failed so miserably. The comic book industry has about 20 percent less value today than it did. Shooter mentioned even the Hulk, X-Men, and Daredevil movies aren't helping the industry. It would take someone who knows both comic books and business principles to
help make a comeback for comic books.
If I ever wanted to create a Defiant Comics roleplaying game for non-commercial purposes, it would be based on the Dungeons & Dragons Version 3.5 using their d20 system. I would not use Green Ronin's
Mutants & Masterminds RPG or the D20 Modern system because I don't understand the rules for either game, plus I can't find elements that would be similar to the Defiant Universe. Dungeons & Dragons has that,
especially with the Ethereal Plane that could be used as the Substratum. Deities & Demigods could also be used as well.
I used to have Valiant Comics too but I gave them away to two of my closest friends, especially after Acclaim ruined Valiant.
