Okay... I'm NOT a fan of Cerebus. That may sound like blasphemy. Despite that, somewhere along the lines of my collecting, I felt that issues numbers below #20 might be neat to own. Here are some of my copies scanned. I have a couple below #10 I believe. Not sure where they are. #10 #12 #14 #17 Defiant1

Of course I scrounged up multiples of this for an entirely different reason. 1st appearance of "Milk and Cheese" by Evan Dorkin Defiant1

Cerebus is a book that's been a big part of my comic collecting life. I bought it since issue #100 all the way to the end at #300. I've got a complete run of all the original issues (my #1 is lower grade, but an original). I personally feel there were a lot of weak moments in the story, there were times where I wondered why I kep buying the book. However, I think overall the story is a comic masterpiece, and when it was good, it was VERY good. I think High Society (issues #26-50) stands up with just about any comic story out there.

Do you own a full set? I've never been a fan of anthropomorphic characters unless it was something linked to my childhood. I can't even read two consecutive pages of Cerebus without wanting to throw it aside. It doesn't matter what issue or how good the art. I've never really understood the fascination people have. I don't think he's cute. I don't find his personality compelling. A lot of people I have known really appreciate the character. maybe some day i'll force myself to read a Cerebus comic. I don't think it will be anytime soon. defiant1

Im still on vacation. Managed to borrow a laptop to check things out. Sucks being at an awesome beachhouse when its 50 degrees out. Anyway, I pretty much feel the same way as Q on Cerebus. I never really understood the fascination. I wonder if it appeals to the anti-establishment comic fans out there as someone who won the fight, therefore they lift the book up to a higher standard than it really is.
Needless to say, I have started trying to piece together a collection. I dont have many at the moment, but when I see them cheap, I buy them. I think my lowest issue at this point is like 28. I dont remember. I think just like anything else with me, the more I get, the more I will buy.
I have cracked a few open and read a few pages here and there. I think the character bothers me more than anything else. The book isnt bad to look at or to read. But, its hard to like an aardvark. No matter how well written or drawn. Maybe if I get a whole bunch of them together I will try and read some back to backs with an open mind. But....its hard to like an aardvark. It just seems to dummy up what looks like a kind of smart book. IMHO.

That's the funny thing, Cerebus isn't meant to be liked. Well, maybe in the early issues he was, but the character did a lot of evil things in his life plus was just basically a selfish bastard in general. When he was Pope, he went as far as to rape a female prisoner he was interrogating (she was a major character in the book, as well). It's not a book to read if you want to follow the life of a likable character.
I do have a complete run, I pieced it together over the years, but I bought issue #100-up right as they came out. It's really hard to recommend the book to someone. I know that I liked it and that the book captured something for me, but I can't say it would for everyone. If you ever want to read Cerebus at its' best, I would highly recommend picking up the "High Society" phone book. If you read that and don't like it, I probably wouldn't go any further. It's definitely NOT a book where you can pick up a random issue and follow the story. I remember I basically bought issue #100 because it was during the big Black and White speculation time, so I was interested in this book because #100 was an "anniversary" issue. I remember when I first read it, I had no clue what the hell was going on, but it fascinated me, anyway.

I picked up the Jaka's Story phone book for a couple of bucks and was instantly hooked. I've pieced together all but the first four now and am constantly on the look out for them. I've read other bits and pieces and it always holds my interest, I just want to read it from #1 through #300 now.

I have a complete run of Cerebus, probably my favorite comic series of all time. It was a big part of my life for 17 years.

I think you are looking at everything I own. Well, I own duplicates of the Bi-weekly comics because they were 1st appearances. I own the fanzines you've seen.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is published by Aardvark-Vanaheim. Nowhere does it say who the publisher is. The printer is Prenney that printed Mythic comics. Cerebus guide to Self Publishing #nn (ISSN# 0712-7774) Defiant1
