Birth of the Defiant Universe, the first publication from Defiant Comics, came with white gloves and a letter. Do you feel the book itself is incomplete without the gloves? While I do own the gloves, I feel that the book is equally collectible with or without them.

What gloves and what letter??? Seriously, I just purchased one off of Ebay, a real beauty. I'm happy with it even without the gloves/letter (since I just learned of this today, thanks to Defiant1).

Collectible with or without the gloves. Nice touch from Defiant but I kind of roll my eyes at the 'glove thing'. Now I am like butter with my books but to date, have not resorted to handling them with gloves. You wont catch me rolling them up and putting them into my back pocket any longer but I still take care of them.
With gloves... without gloves... both are fine as long as you read your comic. ;D

Wow, my link is tough to find... I'll make it more noticeable as soon as I get a chance. I have a very incomplete page of posters and promotional items.. I guess it should be called promotional AND accessory items. Not everything shown is a promo item. Some could be bought. Here is the link to see the gloves... www.angelfire.com/comics/defiant/Other/Promo/promo.htmlLook at the bottom of the page. The letter and gloves were given out with the BODU book. Defiant1

I don't know anything about them specifically, but you can bet they always exist. With many manufacturing processes, the setup of the equipment is more expensive than the product itself or the cost of the raw materials. If a publisher is making a print run of 1000 copies, you can bet they made extra just in case some got damaged in the process. I used to email a self-publisher if indy comics and he had done a special variant cover with a large store. There were 500 (B&W) "signed and numbered" ones that were sold through a store. Despite that, he had extras that weren't signed and numbered and he sold me 10 of those directly. He obviously had more and kept some for himself. I don't think a 10% safety margin is uncommon. If 1000 was the target number, don't be shocked if 1100 exist. I read a story years ago about one manufacturer. A company told them "We want you to supply us with this product, and we don't want to receive more than 5% in defective product" The company manufacturing the product was so proud of the quality they shipped, that with every case of 100 pieces, they'd throw in a bag with 5 pieces. In the bag was a note which said "As agreed upon, here are the 5 defective ones". Regarding comics though, I also heard stories where employees of a printer would sneak some out the back door and sell them directly. That means that in addition to intended print overruns, there are possibilities of unintended print overruns. I don't know anyone that would pay more for an unofficial/unsigned copy, but I do consider it an added edge that helps a seller to sell the product more easily. It is an interesting novelty. It is something extra to talk about when showing it off. Defiant1

You know, about those gloves -
They weren't intended for you to put them on to read the comic book. If I remember correctly, they were intended to go along with the tagline, "The Gloves Are Off," which I think was in the cover letter. Gloves are off - Defiant - get it?

I had no idea there were gloves with that promo book (which I have, sans gloves)...
How many years later, and I'm still learning more about Defiant!
Great site by the way...I've always wondered if there was a place to discuss Defiant stuff and here it is! WooHoo!

Great site by the way...I've always wondered if there was a place to discuss Defiant stuff and here it is! WooHoo! Soak it all up quick. The sites are coming down in the next couple of months. A handful of people are showing interest in hosting their own sites, but nobody is takng up my offer to send them any content on disk. You'll still be able to discuss the comics here, but the board doesn't have enough members for it to sustain any conversations very long. Defiant1 P.S. I do like seeing the different avatars show up. I tried to make as wide a variety as I could in a relatively short span of time.
