Those look pretty darn good to me! I'd love to have some original EC's, but even lower grade stuff is more than I'm willing to pay. Oh well, at least I can drool over yours!

What's the story behind the the ones with New Direction on the cover? Are they early EC? The New Direction books are actually late EC books. They were published under comic code guidelines which meant they couldn't have words like "shock" or "horror" in the title. The first issues do not have the comics code symbol, but the subsequent issues have very large comics code symbols on them. Most of the new direction books only went 4 or 5 issues before EC quit publishing comics. I have a Piracy #1 that is not depicted yet. actually own more than 50% of the new direction books. i have all of the Psychoanalysis series and Psychoanalysis #3 is probably my favorite cover ever. If you want a very early EC, look at the scan of "Picture Stories From the Bible". I believe it was produced when Bill Gaine's father ran the company under the banner "Educational Comics". Later his son took over and changed EC to Entertaining Comics. My father was a big EC comics fan as a teenager and he traded them 2 for one at a local book store. He just wanted to read them. His favorite was Weird Science. His appreciation of EC probably led to the encoragement that I got to read them as a kid. Q

I was going to ask if they were late EC's under the code but then the lack of the symbol made me think otherwise. Very interesting stuff.

EC and Valiant have very strange similarities. 1) Early works very different from the later works that established their reputation. 2) Later works very experimental and unsuccessful. 3) They feature a strong attention to detail and quality 4) Critical acclaim, yet commercially not a success. 5) Their legacy extends far beyond their publishing window. 6) Highly respected creators isolated and doing their own unique thing. 7) Stories that involve deeper thinking.
