If you'd like to see a New universe Checklist roll out on my sidebar, just forward one to me and I'll post a checklist at some point. I've never read them and probably never will, but that doesn't mean I can't share the information.

I think in particular the Shooter issues of Star Brand and DP7 are books that you would probably enjoy.

I've never read them and probably never will, but that doesn't mean I can't share the information. Q I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you ever read some of the New Universe titles. I think in particular the Shooter issues of Star Brand and DP7 are books that you would probably enjoy. The universe was in disarray when it ended. I would not have bought Defiant, Broadway or Valiant if I had known they ended like they did. It's like hopping on a train to go to a luxury resort and knowing after a few exotic stops that you'll end up in a Turkish prison. If the books weren't so common I might take pride in owning them. If the artwork blew me away I might take pride in owning them. If they had really cool titles and covers I might take pride in owning them. I still remember how I felt when I first saw them in a book store. I just thought "Why?" Why create a new universe when people already liked the Marvel characters they had created. Why redirect resources to a dozen books when you already have a dozen titles that could still be done better. The answer is simple... money. More titles + More sales = More Money. I wasn't buying comics when the New Universe came out. It did make an impression upon me then and that same impression stands today... a negative one. The comics might be very well written, but the greater context of it's existence doesn't appeal to me. Anything that was well written appears to have been bastardized after Shooter was off the books. I never was one with a morbid curiosity. Q

Shooter did a great job writing Star Brand, you're right. Romita Jr did a great job on the art as well. You state the reason for the New Universe was money. I don't believe that was Shooter's underlying motive, though I'm sure he assumed if The New Universe worked it would be successful financially. He wanted to try a new concept for a comic book universe, a concept he apparently couldn't get out of his system' if you will, for quite some time. Some of the other points you make I agree with. The New Universe was certainly hurt by having its funding pulled before launching. I really don't think the universe was in disarray when it ended. There were four ongoing titles when it ended, and over the last ten months or so I'm not sure there's ever been a more unified comic book universe. The possible exception in my opinion is Valiant during Unity. The New Universe was in disarray during the first year, as some of the early writers didn't grasp what was supposed to be going on. One title that was never bastardized was DP 7. The same creative team was on the book for all 33 issues, which includes the Annual. Once the New Universe went Direct Sales only, which was for almost a full year, the issues had lower print runs. I'm slated to send off a DP 7 32 to CGC, as I posted elsewhere earlier.

I've seen both you and Brother J say... "and then it changed". You don't say "and then it got really interesting". New Universe is just a collecting path I have no interest in taking. For all the people who think I idolize Jim Shooter, this is evidence that I don't. I respect his ability and I have confidence in his ability to make a story interesting. He can't take something I'm not interested and make me want to buy it. Even when it comes to his Legion stories, I did like Legion more than other DC comics as a kid. It wasn't a huge leap for me to buy them. Had it been Booster Gold or some other character that I think is stupid, I would not have bought them at all. Q

Okay, I believe you'll never read the New U! To me, a lot of it was good, a lot was not good. It did change, and though I despise what Byrne did to Star Brand, ironically that change in the New Universe resulted from what Byrne did to Pittsburgh. I thought after Star Brand was cancelled, it was interesting how the New Universe characters handled the perceived threat of a nuclear attack on America, and it was fun too. Good times.

Ha ha! Did you say you sold all your New Universe stock? Q Yes, but I kept my New Universe art including the production art...the only thing I actually collect. I wouldn't part with such things as my New Universe display either. One of my best New Universe items is a New Universe poster signed by a multitude of New U creators at the 1986 San Diego show.

whiteevent.com is now registered to a guy in Egypt who isn't using it at the moment. After I had it another New U fan registered and used the name for a while on a New U site.
