I finally took the time to read this. Real good stuff. It's amazing to me that Jim is so good at this kind of stuff. It makes you really wonder what happened when he actually puts out something that's not good, because otherwise, in my mind, he has a fabulous track record.
What I'm referring to that wasn't very good was Secret Wars II. The original Secret Wars was so great, but I hated the second one. I had to keep looking at the credit box to make sure it was actually written by Jim.

I wasn't buying comics when Secret Wars II came out. Secret Wars (I) was starting when I got out of comics. I thought it was unnecessary, it disrupted the stories in place, and it required me to buy too much too keep up. I was more interested in dating back then. I don't regret getting out of comics though. It gave me a good perspective of the hobby when I got back into it.

I have just re-read it and I thought the story was very self-contained. Sure, if you wanted to see how the heroes got to the Beyonder's realm and later, if you wanted to see how the things that happened in the Secret Wars affected the characters after they went back home, then you would need to buy the individual titles. The Secret Wars story itself though was all included in the 12 issue mini series. You sure as heck can't say the same thing for Secret Wars II. If you didn't buy the crossovers for that series, you basically had an incomplete story.

If you didn't buy the crossovers for that series, you basically had an incomplete story. Time was a big factor. Changes occurred immediately in each series, but you had to wait a year to get the full story. I had no interest in waiting so I stopped buying after Secret Wars #1. Keep in mind that I was already fed up with the Brood storyline in X-Men and nothing irritated me more than assistant editors month. Ultimately it was an assistant editors month that I said to hell with the bullshit. I knew nothing about San Diego or why the editors had fill-ins. I just knew there was a whole month of books that I thought were crap and they had nothing to do with what I had been reading. I was already buying all the superhero titles and anything that looked interesting. The "events" eventually just gave me a reason to stop cold turkey. defiant1
