I always felt this series was a waste. I never understood why it lasted so long. I bought it up until #13 when they originally came out. I picked up a #51 cheap much later. Alpha Flight #1 - Tacky Cover... Alpha Flight #3 - Byrne commented on this cover once... can't remember why. Alpha Flight #13 - Horrible Wolverine cover... Alpha Flight #51 (1st Jim Lee Art for Marvel) - Not that I really care... Defiant1

I like the Byrne run of this title. I don't believe I currently have a set, but I'll gladly take one if I ever find them in a cheap box. I do agree that the two Byrne covers you posted are some of the worst in the run, as Wolverine looks out of proportion on #13, while the cover of #1 is a little on the "corny" side.

This would have made a better cover for #1:

To be honest, I didn't like any covers I saw on this series. This was the phase of his career where everyone had a goofy smile. Most characters were drawn scrawny. A smiling Sasquatch loses my interest quickly.

I liked it for about 15 issues and then it just became awful. I actually have a CGC 9.8 of both #1 and #2. Not that that is spectacular by any means, but one needs a thread like this just to mention it.
I think Bryne was still pretty tight during this period, but he was just starting to get into that loose style that made it look like he could whip up a page in minutes. I like what he did here, but I also feel he was just beginning to decline right around this point. Once he was done, every time I seen an Alpha Flight, it just looked like pure crap. I don't even like Jim Lee's issues either. And the gay outing of Northstar in #106....oh man, that is just a piece of garbage IMO.

Yeah, he was getting skinnier, but I like his FF almost as much as his X-Men run. This was the last time I really liked the Fantastic Four. I thought his run was fun and reminded me of the Lee/Kirby years. It really was after the FF/Alpha Flight/Captain America years that I think Bryne just got too loose and I never cared for his art that much again. But during this period, I think he was still one of the better artists in the game.

His stuff got downright pathetic after Next Men was cancelled. I think it shattered his ego or something. It was like he quit caring.

Agreed. It's hard to look at his work of the last 15 years or so, when I remember how awesome his stuff was in the late 70's and the very early 80's. It seems like once he became a household name to comic fans, he no longer had to put out great work anymore, just barely passable work.
Bryne is one of those artist I kind of think....it's sad how it turned out.

I really liked Byrne's work on the first 2 years of the post-crisis Superman books. But when he drew Superman again for "Action Comics" years later with Gail Simone, his drawings definitely looked weird and off. Real bulky character heads and just didn't look like the old classic stuff he was doing. I had to double check the cover credits to see if it was really him doing the artwork.
I haven't checked out his Star Trek stuff he's been doing for IDW these days.

I missed almost all his DC work. Wasn't collecting then. If he was still drawing in 1991 for them, I wasn't buying DC.

His art was still pretty top shelf to me at that point.

All the way until issue #600. That whole relaunched "Super" run is what got me hooked into superhero books and DC in the first place. ;D I remember buying the "Time" magazine cover he did for the 50th anniversary of Superman back then too. I think there were some original art panels in there.
