I just got a mess of these that I fished out of a discount bin. Dreadstar is pretty cool stuff. I'm intrigued by it. Not Starlin's best (that would be his 70's Warlock stuff) but it's a very nice series. Its kind of his version of Star Wars with some elements of his Warlock run thrown in for good measure. Definately recommended (especially the first 30 or so issues) but buy it in mass quantities, it can take a few issues to see where the series is going.

Somewhere in my collection is the first issue he ever did. I did not like the stuff I saw, so I never bought anymore. I am a fan of Starlin's Captain Marvel, but not his Warlock. I'd bet there was a fantasy element that turned me off. I wince a little when I see this title. I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did. I think Peter David wrote some of the later issues. That alone is enough to run me off. Peter David's characterization takes it's toll on me very quickly. All his characters start acting like an extension of himself. Structurally his stories are fine, I just hate his dialogue. I rejoiced when Peter David left Hulk. Defiant1

I picked up a copy of Dreadstar #1 out of the cheap box last show I went to, the dealer had a nice run of the early issues, but I wanted to at least try it out before I bought a bunch. Haven't read it yet, though.

Defiant1 I can't think of any "fantasy" elements in Starlin's Warlock could've had that his Captian Marvel didn't. Their certainly weren't any wizards, gods, and demons wondering around like in Dreastar . And ofcourse Warlock didn't last long. I've only read two New Universe issues that Peter David wrote, so that's all I have to judge the man's work by, and they're very, very good. I don't know if I really want to read him on Dreadstar, though. It was Starlin's story. Reading the issues in the 30's he seemed to be wrapping things up. I would've liked to see him do some sort of ending for his characters. Instead the book somehow goes 30+ after the fall of Lord Papal!

Anything that leans towards feudal references doesn't endear me. Even the concept of Knights on Broadway had an uphill struggle with me, but I trusted the team delivering it. Starlin had as many misses with me as he did hits. My original copy of Iron Man #55 was worn out I read it so much. I passed on most of the Warlock issues at the stands. I thoroughly enjoyed his series Wyrd. I never bought any of the Infinity stuff. I almost bought breed but decided a mini series wasn't worth it. Defiant1

I like starlin's art. I was a Starlin fan, but this was unreadable to me. Nothing interested me about it at all. I have #1-4 Dreadstar (Epic) #1 Defiant1

I always thought this would be an interesting title to collect. Surprised to hear that you didn't feel the writing was very good.

It's a bit too far out for me. When you get into things like cat people, that stretches it for me. I have no memory of the writing. I just know I didn't like it.

Merged two threads on this comic. Didn't realize I'd already scanned this. Here is a second copy. Defiant1

Finally had a chance to read Dreadstar (at least all the Epic issues) and I enjoyed it pretty well.

Finally had a chance to read Dreadstar (at least all the Epic issues) and I enjoyed it pretty well. You must have finally completed collecting the series. Jim Starlin on a project gives it credibility regardless of what it is. His stuff reaches a certain level of acceptability simply because he worked on it. Theme-wise... this isn't something I've ever wanted to read. Same with his Warlock stuff. Defiant1

I guess what you are saying is that you don't enjoy "cosmic" themed books.

When characters look like cats or raccoons and fight side beside humans... then I lose interest. I'm not a fan of fantasy. If "cosmic" shifts over to "fantasy", the chances of me liking it falls faster than an elephant walking off of a cliff. On the other hand, I love Hudnall's Harsh Realm series for Harris Comics despite it being genuine sci-fi story wrapped around a fake fantasy theme. Defiant1
