Found some cheap copies of Atomic Mouse Vol.2 in really nice shape, so I picked them up, knowing the print runs on these late issues are relatively low. When I got home, I noticed a problem with the #10. There was a staple right through the middle of the book! It went about halfway through. I removed it and then I noticed the book had no staples at the spine and there were no holes where staples might have been, either. I'm wondering if this was a mistake when the book was put together or something that happened later. Since there were no staple holes in the spine, I'm thinking it was a defective copy out of production.

Especially as their aging equipment got older and older. I think that is the leading cause of their demise. I think the book slipped through without any staples and someone added one to hold the book together, Just a guess though. Defiant1

I agree with that. I'm pretty sure I have a Charlton or two in similar condition. I also have one or two severe miswraps where they are stapled quite a distance from where the spine "should" have been.

It's kinda weird. having their own printing facility helped them cut costs in the beginning, but as the equipment aged it probably contributed a lot towards their demise. They should have saved money all along and scheduled regular equipment upgrades. Defiant1

That's a key reason I absolutely treasure any books I find of theirs in say VF or better condition. I probably only have about 5 - 10 books I would consider true NM material. To me what made them so crappy is part of the charm when you go after them in the hunt. I don't know why but I get almost more proud of my high end Charltons than I do of my high end Marvel and DCs. They just seem so rare.

I think some are not getting bids because they've been listed in more than one auction. Defiant1
