Just curious. I remember back in '99 that someone posted on a newsgroup claiming that their retailer had recieved some sort of promotional package for Daring Comics, the self publishing venture Shooter was planning at the time. Nothing more was ever posted about it.
Did any such a thing exist? As far as i know ,the only thing related to Daring Comics anywhere is a press release on MileHigh.com that was used "to test the waters" and see if there was any interest in the venture. From interviews with Shooter, it sounded like the concepts never made it past the early conceptual phase.
So does anything beyond the Mile High releases exist on this aborted publishing effort?

Nothing more was ever posted about it. Did any such a thing exist? As far as i know ,the only thing related to Daring Comics anywhere is a press release on MileHigh.com that was used "to test the waters" and see if there was any interest in the venture. From interviews with Shooter, it sounded like the concepts never made it past the early conceptual phase. So does anything beyond the Mile High releases exist on this aborted publishing effort? Yes. A little more exists. I acquired what I guess you'd call a press package shortly after Mile High announced the project. Jim sent me the package through the offices of the magazine that had been publishing my cartoons. My friend was writing a monthly column for the same magazine and I knew he had interviewed Jim Lee in months prior. My friend said it was "his dream to interview Jim Shooter". I thought it would be worthwhile to arrange the interview and give some legs to his ambition. The publication was a pop culture magazine for Atlanta and the interview would have been perfect. Upon receiving the package, I scanned over the contents briefly and LOANED it to my friend so that he could read it and conduct the interview. My expectation was that I would get it back as soon as the article/interview was written. Well, my friend "supposedly" conducted a phone interview while I was off working my regular job. I say "supposedly", because no evidence exists that an interview was conducted. My friend claimed he was going to wait to write the interview after any Daring Comics were solicited. I asked why it mattered. The answer I got from my friend was evasive and to this date, I have no answer or explanation of what transpired in, on and around the date of the supposed interview. Part of "waiting for the comics to be solicited" meant that a return of the packet had to be delayed. Some 4 years or so later, I still do not have the packet back. The current excuse (as opposed to "logical justified reason") is that he was going to write the article on his brother's computer and that the packet is being held by his brother who cannot locate it. The Atlanta Sideshow, which is the name of the magazine which was to run the article is no longer in print. The owner/editor decided to instead devote his energies towards pushing a movie script which he had been writing. The magazine was a lot of work with not many emotional or financial rewards for the guy steering it all. It was critically acclaimed, especially among college age kids, but it was a lot of work drumming up the advertising dollars to support it. So, no interview was written. The packet is misplaced or lost. I remind the "friend" almost EVERY single time I see him that he has it and that it was sent to ME, not him. I've even offerred him $50 to take the effort to FIND it. He needs the money, but that bait does not seem to be enough. I've addressed this from every angle. I've made it clear that I consider myself to be the steward responsible for it's safe care, not him or his brother. I was extremely angry that the interview never got published because it wasted my time and Jim's time (assuming the interview even took place). I am angry every single time I hear a lame excuse from him. If there are any truths that are evading me in this matter, then someone desperately wishes to keep it that way. In retrospect, I should have done the interview myself and kept the packet myself. I think I overestimated my friend's ability to conduct a professional interview. I definitely overestimated his ability to have any respect for the efforts I took and "property" he has "lost". Jim ~might~ have called off the interview, but I have NO information whatsoever on the matter. If the interview was conducted, then a tape of it is lost with the Daring Comics packet. I believe there was a concept summary of the intial project. It seemed more sci-fi related as opposed to being superhero oriented. I think there was also a small sketch or two in the packet. I didn't look at the packet very long. I THOUGHT I'd be getting it back. Defiant1

Talk about the one that got away.
Daring Comics would've been very sci-fi. Just about any search for it on the Net will pull up the Mile High press release with synopsis of the first two series, both of which would've ben set in a future were Earth has colonized the entire Solar System.
That packet would probably be rarest Shooter-related material in existance, especially if it had sketches that were never released to the public.

"friend" or not, I consider it stolen. Maybe he'll read this. dp

I'll help kick your 'friend's' ass if you want...as long as you just let me read what we get back... Nah. He's not the type that you can beat common sense into and it would just make a sloppy mess that someone had to clean up. What bugs me the most is that everything was on standard 8-1/2" x 11" office paper. Everything would have been easy to copy. If he wanted to have a copy for himself or anyone else, it would have been easy. There is (and was) no reason for him to keep my copy. Another thing. If there was any artwork, it would have been maybe a couple of 2.5" square panels tossed into the middle of a plot summary. The majority of the packet was background information for the interview and I don't think it was related to the daring Comics venture itself. I know the Forbes Magazine article about Jim was in the packet. Regardless of how much info was in there, it's still more than anyone else has.... and it's lost!!!!!? Grrrrr! Defiant1

Defiant1 I have the article if you want a copy (the one from Forbes). I still think beating some sense into him MIGHT help...you never know until you try! Besides, I can use a trip down to Georgia...it sounds like fun.
