I remember this comic!!! This is the comic that led to me no longer subscribing to any comics anywhere. It came out around the time Acclaim was publishing Unity 2000. I used to scour through previews ordering oddball indy comics. Occasionally, I'd be told the store was shorted on what they'd ordered and I'd have to wait an extra week to get the replacement. Such things happen. One week I show up on new comics day. This little oddity was in the new shipment they'd received. It's odd because the top edge is actually the spine where the book is folded. You have to turn it 90° to the left to read the comic. It wasn't anything special, but the owner asked me if I wanted it. I said "sure" and it was added to my stack. To make a long story short, the book was ordered for someone else. The owner had sold me someone else's comic and backordered it for the other guy. He was doing the same with my special orders. In other words, things I wanted to "review" for quality were coming to me a week late or Diamond was selling out and I was getting shorted the book entirely. I was pissed and cancelled my subscription immediately but agreed to pick up anything I'd preordered. I had I think 10 copies of Unity 2000 #3 ordered and I wasn't sure I was going to get them. I went to the store which was closer to home and upped my order to about 20. I ended up getting Unity 2000 #3 from both stores. In the end that was pretty cool because it was the last issue and the hardest to find.
Without further delay, here is the comic that pissed me off and stopped me from subscribing to comics anywhere.
Fly Boys #1
It's rather simplistic and stupid if you ask me. I'm not a fan of Phil Hester's art. It's like a really lame rip-off of Dave Steven's "The Rocketeer". As you can see by the cover, this character extends his arms and he hold these two propeller engines in his grip. How stupid is that? How tired would you be holding two engines out at arms length while you fly?
At the time I bought it, I hadn't really paid attention to how stupid the concept was. It was just an interesting package.
After this point, I hung out at a store much closer to home. I refused to subscribe, but if the manager knew I was interested in something, he'd order it based upon that alone. I made no promises to buy anything, but if I said I would buy 5 of something if they were on the shelf, he'd have at least 5 on the shelf.
