I was at a convention today and Bob Burden came up behind me and extended his hand for a handshake. I was glad to see him up and about because the last time I'd heard about him he was still hospitalized and recovering from some serious food poisoning in New Orleans. He wasn't quite as upbeat as he normally is, but he said he was doing well. I was glad to hear it. He was not a featured artist at the show. He simply attended as a regular guest.

Defiant1 Thanks for the update! Very glad to hear he's up and about. Find any goodies at the show? My next local show is this upcoming Sunday, though I'll be surprised if I find anything worth buying. The dealer who has the best cheap boxes is not going to be there, so I won't be shocked if I'm in and out in an hour or less.

I really wasn't looking for anything other than the Continuity Comics I'm missing. I did buy the 3 TPB's (the ones I scanned) for half price. The owner said he would not have put them in the half price box but his employees had filled them up for him. I only bought them becuse they were half price.
I also bought a Dark Horse Preview book... a Diamond Promo booklet showing artwork for upcoming projects. It was mid 90's vintage. It was only a $1.

Hey D, was that the one day show in Atlanta? I couldn't make it down, but our buddy Clyf from the CC forum made the trip. Not got a show report from him yet. Wondering if the show is still pretty good for a one day event?

Wondering if the show is still pretty good for a one day event? It had a better mix of dealers this time, but I wasn't looking for anything. Insurance for two vehicles is due the first of next month. Ad valorem tax is about to be paid. I have hospital bills looming as soon as the insurance portion gets paid. Gas expenses are approaching $125 a week I'm not hurting by any means, but I just don't like to see negative cash flow... ever. Defiant1

By the way, I finally picked up a copy of Visions #3 today at Wizard World. Only paid $3 It did have a pretty big crease in the back cover, but the front cover sure looks pristine. Can't beat the price.

Just picked up a magazine called Greed, issue #6. Not only does it have a great Flaming Carrot cover by Burden, but it also has an extensive interview with him. This doesn't even mention the Milk and Cheese two page story, which is supposedly one of (if not the actual) first appearances of the strip. All I need to know about Bob that shows to me he'd probably be a guy I'd like if I ever met him was this one sentence in the intro to the interview: "As the party picked up speed Bob strapped on an oxygen mask and wandered around the hotel room, bleating "Mommy! Mommy!" A Frank Booth imitation, my kind of guy...

He always seems to measure the reactions of people around him. I think introverts have a tendency to be more creative because they have time to think and their minds have less distractions. They can allow it to wander into very bizarre topics which other people don't allow themselves the time to think about. defiant1

I owned a store in the mid-eighties and could pretty much read whatever I wanted to. Flaming Carrot was one of the few books I read and my absolute favorite.

Q great, I wonder if he'll restart the Flaming Carrot series he was doing with Image. The way the comic book market is now, I imagine he will probably start with yet another #1 issue if he does another FC book.

He said he's been working on Hollywood projects. He named off some Hollywood names that are evidently prominent, but I didn't recognize them. He told me the projects they'd worked on and they are well known, but I can't remember them right now. Anyway, he was submitting stuff to them. Having heard a few stories about other people working in Hollywood, I asked if he was getting treated with respect. He grinned. His answer implied there was a parity and that all was well. Q

Well, I managed to buy one of my "holy grail" books. I got a copy of Visions #1 at a local comic show yesterday. I spied a copy of Visions #4 on top of a dealer's table, and saw it was on top of a small pile of magazines. Visions #3, Visions #2, and then... Visions #1, there it was! He had a price tag of $42 on it, which is a steal. Sadly, I looked into my wallet and I only had $41 left. I asked the dealer if he would take $41, to which he responded that all the books at his booth were 50% off. So I happily paid him my $21. It's in great condition, too. The dealer had it graded as NM/M. I would grade it more likely as a very strong VF, VF+. I now have Visions #1-4 complete.
Let me know if you ever come across any of the other Visions issues, Defiant1. I'm looking for #5-9. #8 and #9 say "Atlanta Fantasy Fair" on the cover.

I'll do that, but if they say "Atlanta Fantasy Fair" they are probably pretty rare. After I attended the show in 1981 and got Visions #3 as a handout, I think the attendance started dropping in the years after that. The couple that owned the show got a divorce and there was the settlement issue as to who owned the show or how to split it. I think one year the people I hung around didn't even know where it was held. It was just forgotten. The last one I remember attending was a decent show. That's where I got my Hulk #1. Evidently that last show got raided for a dealer selling porn DVD's of that underage porn actress. I can't think off her name now, but her career was a big deal and most people know her name. After that I never saw another AFF show. I do know a guy who told me last month he worked on their staff for awhile. He may know about them, but he doesn't take great care of his stuff if he were to have them.

I don't guess there is any Flaming Carrot content in those. If there was, you could probably contact Bob through his myspace page and ask him if he knows anything. www.myspace.com/bobburdenBob told me that is his page, but I'm not sure how often he logs on. You could probably buy some art. Maybe not. Bob draws on oversized sheets that he has specially cut for him. I don't remember him having any pages the last time I saw him.

I don't guess there is any Flaming Carrot content in those. Not stories, but most of the rest of them have Flaming Carrot pinups. Here's a list: www.flamingcarrot.com/FlamingCarrotPage/FCbibliography.html#5 was the last magazine sized issue, the rest were digest-sized. Supposedly the print run went up with each successive issue. Interesting note on the last one, which came out in 1987: 2 pgs.of FC pin-ups. Digest size. Says ATLANTA FANTASY FAIR on cover and WORLDS OF FANTASY inside. Not called VISIONS anywhere as Lamar Waldron, who published Visions was usurped from the convention director’s seat by a junta rumored to be backed by none other than Fidel Castro! Digest size.

I love it when I have enough money left over after buying comics to eat. ;D Ah, I can always pull out the old credit card to buy lunch, which is what I did! Brought home lunch for my wife, which also helped to score points. Speaking of food, that's one of the reasons I didn't stay at the show long. They start cooking food around 11:00 inside the show room, something on some kind of grill. The smell is so overpowering, and really doesn't smell very good to me, and it's worse when I don't feel too good, as was the case yesterday morning. After I spent half of what I had left, I figured I'd call it a day before I whoopsed my cookies.

I was wondering where to post this, but this thread is perfect. It couldn't be more perfect. I slept almost all day and decided to get out of the house when I woke up. I said to myself "let me go somewhere different". so I decided to check out a newly remodeled club in towards town. A guy I work with used to be a manager there and he said it'd been completely redone inside. So I did. I walk in. I'm underwhelmed. I'm thinking I might have made a mistake. I figure what the hell, I'll get a sugar free red bull, and see what the crowd is like. On the way to the bar, I get a scent of food, but I don't see it. I'm thinking "where did that come from", but it was a strong aroma. Leaving the bar I smell the food again, but still don't see it. I thought to myself, "this is weird". I walk back to the entrance and I'm thinking..... "Do I really want to stay here?". I look around one more time and to my left, there is Bob Burden sitting down all alone. He's chowing down. The food I smelled was his. I say hello. He was remembering my name. We chat for a little bit and then his phone rings. He starts giving someone directions over the phone. We chat a little bit more and then his guest appears. It was Lamar Waldron, publisher of Bob's early work and founder of the now defunct Atlanta Fantasy Fair. Lamar and I started talking and I could see Bob contributing less and less to the discussion. Bob finally bows out and says he's got to get up early. Lamar and I continue to chat for quite awhile. I'm thinking 2 hours must have elapsed, but I'm not sure. Lamar knew some other people I know and he is a super nice guy. He started telling me stories and I was thoroughly entertained. In the course of the conversation, the following people he's known over the years popped up...
Greg Theakston Dave Stevens Forest Ackerman Jim Steranko Ben Englund David Mack William Stout Brinke Stevens
The list goes on. Some were mentioned briefly and some he was pretty good friends with. I feel stupid, but I did not know Brinke Stevens was Dave Stevens' ex-wife. About the time I was going to ask him about the Visions publications, he had to leave. By that time it was pretty late and I needed to go eat. But anyway, that was weird-coincidence-of-the-week for me.

I was looking through a folder of Dragon Con pictures to see if I had any pictures of Richard Hatch. I wanted to see what Realm Comic variants he had on his table. I found this picture instead and did a double take. This is Bob Burden on the left. The picture is a little blurry, but that looks like Lamar Waldron on the right. I didn't know I'd taken a picture of him in 1999. I thought he was just a fan talking to Bob. Defiant1

I went to a one day show today but didn't buy anything other than a hardback that Bob Burden was selling on artist's row. He drew a sketch and them set it on top of his art supplies when done. It has a couple of blemishes now. He tossed in a copy of the Image softcover marked as "Volume 6 Flaming Carrot Comics" on the inside. One of his fans was there and the fan had brought his two adorable daughters Both very young. Bob drew a sketch for the girls and let them draw adjacent to his sketch. Some of it got recoded on video. I was wearing my "Killer Robots" t-shirt just by coincidence. Bob commented on that because the Flaming Carrot fumetti comic has the Killer Robots in it alongside the Flaming Carrot. Bob has drawn a new Flaming Carrot story that he will self publish in a two volume collected edition. It will only be available in the collected edition. I got to see the artwork for that with Bob reading it out to me as he flipped pages. Overall it was a different type of experience because there wasn't much I wanted at the show and I didn't plan on spending a lot anyway. Defiant1

well, guess I won't be reading that Flaming Carrot story, no need for any "collected editions" as I already have all the books. The Dark Horse/Image reprint trades just came out not that long ago, so I'm not sure why there is a need to issue more reprints. I guess he wants to reprint his books as much as Elvis Costello re-issues his music.

He talked like everything he's reprinted has been selling out and select items are showing escalated prices on the secondary market. One of the characters in his new story is I believe Captain Oxy (or something like that). He doesn't have any super powers, but he takes a lot of Oxycontin and thinks he does. Defiant1

Actually, the book I got has an 8 page text introduction of his new characters "The Legion of Danger". It does not have the new story. The only Flaming Carrot Comics I had are the ones Bob Gave me years ago (Dark Horse era stuff) a comic sized Flaming Carrot #1 that I posted here a few years ago. I thought a limited Hardcover was kinda neat. Actually, I did buy a couple of his more recent stuff but he didn't draw those. The new story is going to be in an upcoming two volume collection.
I just noticed he mentions the bad state of the economy in this book. I really don't think you'll see regular issues anymore. That's my personal opinion. He us asking that fans email him or visit his website and get put on his mailing list.
