Added a Gallery page for Best Cartoon Series. I had to design a logo since the text from the indicia does not match the text on the cover. Defiant1

Added a Gallery Page for I had to correct the listing on my checklist. I had a #48 listed as being from this series. Upon acquiring a scan for the comic it was determined that it should be listed a Cowboy Western Comics not Cowboy Western Heroes. Defiant1

While looking through a comic scan of an old Charlton Comic, I discovered an ad for a Maco Toys comic. I did a little research and discovered that it is attributed to Charlton and it has been added to the other reference sites earlier in the year. A gallery has been added. Defiant1

I have removed TNT Comics #1 from the list. It was published by Carlton Comics, not Charlton. Alter Ego magazine clarified the difference. I had already removed Merry Comics #1 for the same reason.

The Charlton Checklist is a rather large undertaking due to the size and number of scans involved. Since I will not pay for site and image hosting, I am at the mercy of what is available for free. The HTML is not a problem so far. It does not take up a lot of space and the sites I have seem to be fairly reliable up until this point. The images are a problem because they do consume a lot of space. Photobucket was a good hosting option until recently. Photobucket has disallowed direct linking. It is the only site that has ever offered direct linking... intentionally. As my "test" thread in the admin section shows, some image hosting services do unintentionally allow direct linking. I do not expect that to be ongoing. Regardless, I'm testing slickpic and may migrate some images to their service. Again, my prediction is that my sites will not be on the web in the future. This is a time consuming chore whic is likely only going to delay the inevitable. Here is the first title I've migrated to slickpic. covergallery.sinfree.net/Charlton/All_American_Sports/All_American_Sports.htmlThe direct link is on the "A" i-frame from the main page. covergallery.sinfree.net/Charlton/Charlton_Comics_A_Titles.htmlf**k Photobucket.com

Nice work! I have a couple of those! My favorites from this set is one of my favorites from a lot of sets of Chartltons and that is from what I consider to be the Charlton "Deathbed 75 cent" era. (I just made it up, but I kind of like the term "Charlton Deathbed 75 cent era". I pretty much like ANY Charlton with a 75 cent price tag on it. These are the last comics they produced and from the few I've seen, it's like they put a bit more into making 1 last push at existing. The paper quality seems just a bit better and they look like they tried to even be a bit more modern looking. The previous 60/65 Charlton Comic typically had Abysmal Paper Quality. Finding anything High Grade from this era (60/65 cents) is almost Amazing when you find them. So many Copies just plain SUCK! One of the better made 75 centers I have even has like a Bullpen Bulletins Type Page displaying some RARE Company personality. Typically their comic advertisements had all the warmth of an old flea market toaster. This Bullpen tried to appear like they had a little personality. (When did that ever happen?) A lot of 75 centers have Low Distribution because the end was so close. I used to grab them all on the cheap whenever I found them in dumpster boxes. Whenever I finally get back to collecting one day. I will resume my search for more Charlton Deathbed 75 centers.

Whenever I finally get back to collecting one day. I will resume my search for more Charlton Deathbed 75 centers. I had a LOT of problems collecting good quality scans of these and some I had to compromise and borrow from the GCD. I had so much problems that when I went to make these pages I saw one that just wasn't acceptable to me. I went searching for another scan of #12 and lucked up. I found an "okay" scan with an eBay watermark and I found a second that was almost as good. I cloned the corner of the second copy to remove the watermark from the first. Then I had to go back and get the colors to match. If I can clone pixels from another area of the cover to get the colors to match, then a scan is usable. I think the most tedious repair is removing a color breaking crease from cross hatching. I'm transitioning all of the "A" titles to Slickpic for hosting. This is an EXTREMELY time consuming process, but I'm completely fed up with photobucket. Slickpic loads faster, it just takes a few extra step to get the direct links. Defiant1

Never seen or even heard of that title before. #unique Nor had I until I started my checklist. It looks like this series was running on fumes if it was going to feature this multi-talented guy playing a different sport each issue. 1955 was a year that Charlton featured a lot of new and short-lived series. It's possibly stuff "in the can" that was produced by other companies that folded and were bought by Charlton. My motivation to continue updates is fueled by little milestones. Every cover gallery I post is a milestone. A gallery page is one more title completed and knocked off the list. A bigger milestone which I've failed to reach is the completion of a letter of the alphabet. I feel like I'm getting close with the letter "A" and it's not a really small set of titles. You'd think the the letter "Z" would be easy, but finding good quality scans of the middle era "Zoo Funnies" title has been a challenge. Certain genres seem near impossible to find. 70's titles like Valley of the Dinosaurs and the Flintstones titles are hard to find in nice shape if a scan is available. One letter which will look much better after I trim and clean up the images is the letter "R". There is a push by a small number of online people to scan all the romance covers, so some really obscure cover scans are popping up. A few Hot Rod cover scan have been popping up also. Most likely the most time consuming titles will be the Fightin' Army, Navy, and Marine titles. I expect I'll have scans of all the Canadian price variants before I even come close to getting all the war titles completed. Defiant1

Defiant1 I imagine you are right about the works being from other companies that folded that Charlton took over for. I read they did stuff like that and since they were notoriously cheap, why not put out work you already have completed? Your work on the checklist makes me appreciate my collection of Charlton Comics even more. In all my selling of comics, I haven't sold 1 Charlton, nor do I plan to. As hard as it is just to find scans of the comics, it's probably just as hard if not harder to find the actual comics. In my years of taking note of Charltons, which in the big scheme of things is relatively low, I have yet to see ANYONE with a really nice collection of Charltons. Even a good amount. I think the most I ever seen 1 dealer ever have was about 2 boxes worth at one time and the majority of it was pure tattered overpriced crap that I hardly wanted anyway. I still say a lot of Charlton's in Fine condition is in a lot of cases, the best you ever see. I consider that for some eras to be high grade. Heck, it's the only company I know where Very Good is often considered acceptable decent stuff with them. My collection has very few issues in the Very Fine and above range. Even more noteworthy, issues like this that you have galleries and have become part of your checklist represent issues I doubt I will ever see in person, anywhere. I truly think your Checklist deserves to be collected in a volume like a book or something like that and would make the Ultimate Archive Reference for Serious Charlton Enthusiasts (The few that there really are). In any event, it just seems like it represents a collected work of forgotten and unappreciated comics that at one time was nipping at the heels of Marvel and DC competing for Collector's Dollars. I still think some of the late 50's to early 70's stuff had some decent moments and off the beaten path interesting works. When you consider how much time, literature, pictures and collections have been put into bigger companies like Marvel and DC and how well those works have been easily experienced by collectors new and old who want to learn of their past, I think it hurts Charlton that there is basically hardly anywhere to go and see and learn about this company and some of the stronger issues. Certainly having artists like Ditko, Aparo, Bryne and other notables have got to have some decent stories there somewhere. The rest of the comic universe has been well documented for the most part. I hope when you near completion of this checklist that somehow it pays off in some way for you in terms of notoriety, fame and listing as some kind of archivist. When this thing is finally done, it's going to be a masterpiece. Please excuse the smoke.

Charlton Spotlight Magazine has been bringing out a lot of info, but unfortunately it's only centered around the people who are still living and their snapshots of what it was like. You might see a lot on E-Man, but nothing on Frank Merriwell or Jerry Drummer.
