I was a Marvel Zombie and rarely bought anything else. I still appreciated Charlton being out there on the stands. I miss the fact you don't see comics like the ones they offered, even if they weren't my favorites. Just as Brother J & Depluto were the inspiration to do an Ultraverse Checklist, your appreciation of Charlton motivated me to get my Charlton list completed. I'm sure there are more titles, issues, and variants to uncover. Getting scans posted will take awhile, so I'll have time to discover them.

Hillbilly Comics are essentially a Charlton knock off of Lil' Abner. Charlton had a tendency to buy up material from any publisher going out of business. Some titles kept the same name. For others, the unpublished stories were reworked and they found ways to use it without copyright infringement.

Love these!!!! Especially the Space Adventures which is one of my favorite Charlton titles. But I have to admit, I pretty much love all of these. As overlooked as they was, when one digs deep enough, you'll find some nice instances of Charlton work.

Yeah. They are. Charlton printed their comics on a printing press made to print cereal boxes in the 40's. They went out of business in the 80's. I'm collecting scans online and trying to create a complete cover gallery of everything they printed. It is a huge undertaking.

My Charlton Checklist is now updated to version 5.30. covergallery.sinfree.net/Charlton/Charlton_index.htmlI've added scans to my most recent acquisitions... The Best of Good Humor #2 Campus Humor #1 Eye-Opener #4 I've been real quiet about discovering these because I didn't have extra money to buy them. I would not know about them if not for VK keying me in that he had an Eye-Opener #1 existed. All are new discoveries and not listed on any comic checklists. All have the same format as the Cartoon Spice series, except Campus Humor which is about 50% text and 50% cartoons. It has a significantly greater percentage of the publication being text. Defiant1

I acquired somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 Charlton scans over the weeked. This will allow me to complete the scan collections for a few titles and post some gallery pages. I do have to do some cropping and resizing. Some scans will be of lower grade books, but this is to be expected eventually.

Borrowing some even now! It would be cool if you could use less jpg compression. I know that makes the file size bigger, but it also improves the quality of the scan. I haven't had any problems yet... thanks... These are from Empires... Ghostly Tales #129 Ghostly Tales #133 Ghostly Tales #134 Ghostly Tales #136 Retouched a bit to remove stress marks.. Defiant1

His art was better back then. I've been grabbing scans of Charlton art to post later. Low priority, but since you mention it... Defiant1

Although it was only brief, I always thought Byrne was a big shot in the arm for Charlton. There was only 2 or 3 regular solid artists at the time and he quickly became one of their best. I often feel it was way too bad for Charlton that he got away so quickly before really doing a lot of work. Any work he did do is like standout from that period in their history.
I think his art was pretty nice back then, but a lot on the raw side. I often thought he was pretty raw when he first arrived at Marvel too. But his craft was getting considerably better all the time. I really think he peaked around his first 10 - 12 issues of X-Men. Even his later X-Men work didn't compare to those earlier issues in my opinion. He had already started a slight loosening up by the end. You can almost tell his craft was becoming easy to him and it was starting to show.
Compared to his later years output, I would take his early Charlton work hands down to anything he's put out in the last 15 years. At least his early Charlton work was more detailed and tight. He's so loose now, he hardly resembles who he once was.

Ebay on the otherhand, knocks the nonsense out of scans. Glad you're getting some use out of these. Thanks, and I'll look for the carton magazines as well.

Ebay on the otherhand, knocks the nonsense out of scans. Glad you're getting some use out of these. Thanks, and I'll look for the carton magazines as well. I scan everything at 300dpi and then reduce by 25% with Irfanview for the "master" copies I keep on my hard drive. I keep cropped copies at 535 pixels tall if possible and my Charlton site uses an image size of 400 pixels tall because in some cases I just can't find good quality scans greater than 400 pixels tall. I turn off all compression when resizing. JPEG compression screws up solid red paterns and creates what they call "artifacts" in the form of ripples. I'll have to look at the image size of my larger scans when i get home. I'm pretty sure they are below 2MB. Defiant1

Okay, just checked... the technique above definitely produces images smaller than 2MB.
