Gowaltrip is to blame for this, but the "last" Charlton Comics do interest me. I picked up these at the Atlanta Comics Expo. I was amazed that people were charging $10 for some of these books. I paid less than that, but it just struck me as odd. Dr. Graves #73 Professor Coffin # 21 Static #11 Tales of the Mysterious Traveler #14 Defiant1

very nice, that is definitely a niche of comic collecting I enjoy, last issues. I guess it's in part to the perceived value of them, but it's also always interesting to read last issues. Especially those that have letter pages talking about the cancellation.

I saw some others in this era that were misfolded or there was an Atomic Mouse for $10 from 2 dealers and that book isn't worth $10 to me. defiant1

I love Charlton. At one time I owned charltoncomics.com. I should've kept it.

I came across some high grade Charltons in a local store about 10 years ago and I've loved them ever since. I still have some I believe.

I came across some high grade Charltons in a local store about 10 years ago and I've loved them ever since. I still have some I believe. I just like the fact there were alternatives and other genres out there. It wasn't my favorite flavor, but I liked the fact it was an option. Occasionally they tapped into what fans wanted like Space 1999 or Six Million Dollar Man and again, that was cool. Q

I read their payrate for creators was lower than the standard. Their model was different, but they seem to be overlooked considering how many books they published.

I read their payrate for creators was lower than the standard. Their model was different, but they seem to be overlooked considering how many books they published. And somehow I find that the beauty of them. Them being overlooked. The payrate being low, that many times the quality was sub par. The paper quality was more often than not, subpar if not some of the worst in the history of comics, making high grade issues rather difficult to find and thus a joy at least for me to hunt. I find a real thrill in finding anything High Grade which in my humble opinion when it comes to Charlton, A high grade starts around FN+. A VF is often the best stuff you ever see. Out of the few hundred Charltons I now have, I probably only own about 5 to 10 I would truly consider NM (if that). I also find it thrilling when you do find some books that had quality works from artists with decent names. I love getting Charltons with works by Ditko, Bryne, and Aparo just to name a few. There were some decent pieces they did. But, Im not going to kid anyone either. There was tons of crap. Even still, its just not something I find any dealer ever having a lot of. They do have a rather long history in comics. A couple of decades actually. So they have their own place in comic's history and yet every day and year goes by with these books getting older and often not well kept and harder to find especially in decent shape. That any large collection of High Grade Charltons I feel is something to be proud of. And, I think there needs to be a sense of preservation of these comics. They are only getting older and harder to find in good shape. Yeah, Im a fan. I find the books truly fun to buy.

I made more Charlton comics purchases online today.... expect scans in about a week. Unlike the digests which have been low grade and cheap.... these comics are older, more expensive, scarce, and not yet listed in the online comic price guide. One of the comics was not listed at Ramon Schenk's (sp?) Charton site. It has been on my checklist for awhile. This is just a teaser for people to check back. I did not request scans before purchasing. It was a pot luck purchase.

Does anyone know who owns the rights to the Charlton material? Seems to me there'd be a market for some kind of "Essentials" treatment of various titles, like Blue Beetle and Captain Atom.
Is this something DC Comics would be able to do? Or do they just own the rights to the characters?

I think it got split up several ways. I think DC got the heroes. This is what the wikipedia says... Editor Robin Snyder oversaw the sale of some properties to their creators, though the bulk of the rights was purchased by Canadian entrepreneur Roger Broughton. He would produce several reprint titles under the company name of ACG (having also purchased the rights to the old American Comics Group properties), and announced plans to restart Charlton Comics. This had yet to occur as of the mid-2000s, beyond a few reprints. "Charlton's most enduring legacy is its superhero characters, most of which were acquired in 1983 by DC Comics, where Giordano was then managing editor. These "Action Hero" characters were originally going to be used in the landmark Watchmen limited series written by Alan Moore, but DC then chose to save the characters for other uses; Moore instead developed new characters loosely based on them. The Charlton characters were incorporated into DC's main superhero line, where some of them enjoyed renewed popularity, most notably Blue Beetle, Captain Atom and The Question, who had languished in obscurity for years before being reintroduced in DC's epic Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series; Blue Beetle subsequently joined a version of the Justice League of America and played a major role in the events leading up to Infinite Crisis in 2005-2006; The Question played a key role in the subsequent year-long series 52. The team of Charlton characters first planned for Moore's Watchmen became reality in 1999 with the DC limited series L.A.W. Charlton's longest-running character, the funny animal superhero Atomic Mouse, was licensed by the furry comic company Shanda Fantasy Arts in 2001." Of course it has to be fact if the wikipedia says it... Q

I first heard about the Canadien guy buying the rights to a lot of Charlton stuff at least 3 or 4 years ago. Too bad if he's not doing anything with it yet.

Okay... payment has been received & confirmed on my.... Metropolis Comics order. This is the first time I've ever bought anything through them. The order was blind--as in no scan to review.. It'll be interesting to see if their grade lives up to my expectations. Normally I consider their prices to be high. On one of the books the price was $200 on ebay, or a fraction of that through Metropolis. As far as price goes, I thought what they listed sounded reasonable. One of the comics is not on Ramon Schenk's Charlton list. I'm hoping it's nice enough to provide me with a nice scan for people to review online. It looks like it'll be the first scan available. It'll be a "headlights" cover from the solicitation.
3 or 4 more days to wait...

As promised. my order arrived today... I've started a thread to get this added to the cpg price guide. To my knowledge, no price guides were listing this series. It is an adult "gag" cartoon series from 1957. Charlton enthusiast Ramon Schenk was aware of the series, but didn't have an issue #4 listed. Presented for your review, my newest purchases. I like the obscure. I like the interesting. Cartoon Spice #1 -- Beautiful copy, but it does have a subscription crease. Cartoon Spice #3 - Beautiful copy. Headlights cover. Slight discoloration/watermark in top corner. More noticeable on the back cover. Cartoon Spice #4 - Lowest grade of the three. Headlights cover. Discoloration (staining?) on the spine. No other scans to be found online. Couldn't find any site offering it for sale or mentioning it anywhere. Very pleased to uncover this item and share it's existence with collectors. Defiant1

Ramon emailed me. I think he's jealous. He doesn't have #1 or #4 & he just recently got a copy of #3. I like a black background better. That's just me though. Some people think a black background is unprofessional when designing a web site. Q

Well I think it works for you. Your board has always had this since I came here. It DOES make for your photos sticking out better. As they say....black goes with anything and in this case, it offsets whatever book you throw up. I wouldnt be against using a black background, but youve got that covered. You have deeper content and a longer history. Sometimes I need just a little something to make my board a bit different. Its not optimal because I know how it interferes with some things. But overall, I think it helps me be a bit different. I mean, my god, think of how many fewer posts my board would have without the comic background of the day??? Like I said, its not optimal, but it works for me. You be the man in black....it suits you!

You can tell I like to mix it up. My Broadway site was white. My Defiant site changed color to blend with each title. Green for Plasm, Blue for Dark Dominion. My EC site is a color I can't describe. My catfish site is a weird copper color. My Charlton site is pink. My Modern site is a bright baby blue. I am always looking for a color scheme that is easy to read a lets the scans look good. That is why I sometimes use tables with a different color background.

I like it though...It just doesnt seem like a Charlton, but the fact it is makes me want them a whole lot more. These are very unique and I have never seen them anywhere. Even if they werent Charltons, I would probably want them if they were priced right.

More racy comics to come. It'll take me a while to scan them all. I had to buy some non-Charltons to get these last ones. I have no idea where they were sold. They are thicker like Marvel's Giant-Size comics and they are priced higher. It'll be near impossible to get the early ones. I can tell already.
