this auction looks nice: cgi.ebay.com/ART-Org-of-Plasm-Defiant-Comics-Trading-Card-2_W0QQitemZ330283965865QQihZ014QQcategoryZ668QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemOne of the original artists on the card set also posted this bit of info on his question section: Q: Hi, Do you have any more art? A: Hello! Yes, I have another piece of art starting this evening (card #1). I also have the original pencil art (20 card fronts and 8 card backs) I did for another Defiant card set for the Schism crossover event that didn't happen because Defiant folded. I believe I also have a few promo items (poster of The Good Guys which was penciled and inked by me) and the tin set for Org of Plasm which I'll dig up and post.

Interesting. As always... too little too late. I just spent money feeding the extended family and I prefer to buy direct. I do not buy on ebay anymore.

Hello, I was invited to join this site concerning the Defiant work I listed on Ebay. A little background: My name is David Gross and I did work for Defiant through The River Group way back in 1993. I also worked at Heroic on their comic The Rose. Unfortunately for me both companies folded before most of my work was released! I did a book for TSR and another for a local guy and then moved on to other things (commercial art, painting and real estate investment) after the comic industry starte to implode in the mid 90s. I got back into trading cards in 2004 when the original writer of Topps Wacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids (Jay Lynch) hooked me up with the editor who was reviving the brands. I've designed and painted around 200 of the new Wacky Packs along with a dozen or so GPKs, a fe Hollywood Zombies and I recently did work on Topps 2008 Stadium Club sketch cards. Phew. Anyway, I've been digging out all my old stuff as we are preparing for a move. This is what I've found so far: The color art with overlays to bonus cards #1 and #2 for Warriors of Plasm tin set. The inker and colorist got #3 and #4. I penciled all four pieces. I also found photocopies of the pencil work. A photocopy of penciled (my work) and inked (Mark McKenna) art for a Good Guys poster that was sent to comic shops. I also have the poster but misplaced it again somewhere here. Hopefully I'll find it in my mess. A penciled pinup page for Dark Dominion. I can't remember what this was going to be used for. Maybe a poster. Splatter Bowl I preview tin card set (#16917) that they gave me. 28 penciled drawings for a Defiant card set which I believe was Schism. It was for a major crossover event that only had started before Defiant went under. 20 were card fronts with the other 8 being shorter, square shaped drawing to fill half the back while the rest would have been text. The clarge images are: Boxcar (3 different), Caution, Truck, an old chest (not sure which book this was from), Mindfox & Glory, Mindfox & Lorca & Sueraceen, Glory's Grandkids Keith & Kevin, Mindfox & Nobody, Ulnareah, Lorca, Glory, X-Cess, Mindfox w/ Defiant Heroes (2 parts), Babe, Sueraceen, Mindfox & War Dancer, Prudence. The smaller images are: Skipper's Kneepads, Skipper, Caution's Arm, The Master, Prudence in the Dungeon, Billy Ballistic, Charlamagne's Dog Tags, Ngu. I also found from Heroic: Rose #5 cover (would have been the first issue I did) Rose #5 3 page short story pencil art pencil copy pages for another Rose short story which I know was finally published in the last few years. Heroic also has my full length Rose pencil art for Rose #5 which had Rose investigating a mystery concerning a porn star. Maybe that will someday show up in an issue (I hope so as they never paid me for it). Also found some art for Personality Comics George Brett I did and the full colored pages for the TSR comic. I'll have photos at some point as I get to selling them all. I'm selling numerous toys and stuff over the next 4-5 months to purge my house. If I can find any other Defiant stuff like contracts, envelopes, reference material, etc, I'll LYK. - Dave

Dave,
What do you know about the River Group publishing comics? Was it separate from DEFIANT? There is only one comic with the River Group logo on it.

Thanks guys, I will try to have all the photos done through the weekend. I'm also looking for any paperwork I may have saved.
Has everyone seen the Good Guys mini poster that was sent to comic shops? If so I won't kill myself trying to find it right now.
The River Group was separate from Defiant. I was hired by The River Group not Defiant and worked through them. They handled the card sets and promos as far as I remember. I met Shooter twice. The first time was when I went into a meeting with him and a few River Group people and was to sketch anything they talked about. The second time I went into Defiant's office and hung out for the day doing a drawing which I think was the Good Guys poster (if not it was the Dark Dominion piece I have). 1993 was a loooong time ago! Anyway, I remember Shooter being very intimidating and all business but overall a nice guy.

I'm verrrrry curious to find out more (or see pics!) of those never before released "Schism" trading cards.... ;D ;D ;D Especially since there was artwork already made! Was there any more unreleased artwork made for the "Chasm vs. Mule" cards or the "Splatter Bowl 1" series? And I was always curious about the "Defiant Universe" 99 Super-Premium Card Collection too....the one that had only 3 promo painted art cards released but the card series never came out... Oh yea, and welcome to the boards!!!

Just wanted to jump back on for a quick note: I found a photocopy of the pencil art I did for the Good Guys poster (I thought I only had a copy of the inked work and the poster itself).
And...I found my check stubs and invoices for all the work I did. I went to NYC four times not two and actually got paid pretty darn good.
Here some new info. I was a work for hire for a company called American Artists. The River Group hired them for this work and I did the work through them. I forgot all about this until I saw these papers. The head of The River Group is Joe Mauro (still have his home phone number - wonder if its still good??).
If you want to actually see all this stuff I'll get it scanned. The drawings are all listed on the invoices but nothing new concerning which card set they were from.

I usually blur out phone numbers and addresses on any documents I scan and post. That is out of respect for anyone who may have the same phone number or address now. defiant1

Cool stuff. The Glory piece cracks me up. Defiant always had a goofy pose of someone blatantly exhibiting their powers when there were other easier ways to do something. I commonly like to lift things over my head while using the vacuum cleaner. I'll never forget rereading Good Guys #4 when I was making my web site. Laura's dad Dan invites "heater" in for a soft drink as if he's going to be a gracious host. Then he sneaks out leaving the kid alone in the house while he flies around looking for his daughter. I just imagine "heater" thinking Dan is in the other room just waiting and wondering WTF is taking so long.

Hey Guys,
If anyone wants some (or all) of the pieces I am offering the 28 card images for $25 each (the non-character art for $15 - chest, dog tags, arm, etc), The two piece card for $30, the Dark Dominion piece for $30 and the color art of War Dancer I had on Ebay for $40. I will also include a COA for each piece. LMK if your interested at my email: salandrei@aol.com.
Meanwhile I will still get you some scans of the paperwork I have here.
BTW, funny story (and hopefully true), I just saw that Heroic Publishing printed a 12 page Rose story I drew way back in 1993 in an issue of Witch Girls Inc from 2005. I was never paid for the art and when I was digging up the Defiant paperwork I also found my old contracts for this work (and other Rose work). I called the publisher who remembered me and he says he will send me the check for the art this week. If it actually happens that would be pretty cool and weird to get paid 15 years later.
